    Solarez UV Epoxy

Not sure how long this stuff has been around but I am impressed. It sets using either UV rays (3-5 minutes) or MEKP (30 minutes). It arrived by FedEx today so I decided to make a new hatch cover. I used 1/2 ply. Sealing both sides and all 4 edges took a total of 30 minutes before I was sanding...

    ICW vigilance!

This barge was holed by a floating log, about 40 foot in length, yesterday at MM 118 West of Harvey lock. If this is what a log can do to a 6 mph steel barge, I shudder to think what it could do to a fiberglass hull, travelling at....well more than 6 mph. We saw and avoided the log two miles...

    MarineMat Flooring

Baobab got a facelift today! We were tired of the carpet that stayed wet for days and was a bear to clean. We have no teak on the boat so could go with any color and ended up with a grey, hoping it will not show dirt as much. This is obviously not everyone's choice of flooring but we love it...

    Awesome weather service (Florida)

We just crossed the Gulf, using Marv's (free) weather service for the second time. While weather forecasting is always a bit of a crap shoot....this guy seems to have it as right as any. We had a front come through the night before our planned departure so emailed him, was instantly given...

    Kemah, Florida and beyond

Well, we left Kemah, did final prep in Beaumont and are now in Lake Arthur Louisiana, we we had planned on over nighting. We are having so much fun that we have stayed almost a week. This is definitely a recommended stop. For those that don't want to come all the way up the river, there is an...

    Boat wake liability

Article copied from Seaworthy magazine; Whether you're in a no-wake zone or not, you are responsible for any injury or damage caused by your wake. Let's face it, pretty much all powerboats create a wake. Especially on inland waters, where primarily small craft operate, wakes can be...

    Dinghy electronics

I was looking at installing a depth sounder/fish finder on my new dinghy. Then I saw the Garmin 44 DV which has DownVu, tides/currents and G2 maps, preinstalled for less than $300 (can even accept AIS data). Anyone using this unit or has suggestions on a better/more versatile one, please let me...

Close call - Shaft log split

Well, went out on a four boat raft up, had a great day upriver, swimming and enjoying good company. We left first and were tidying up the boat in our slip when the next boat came in listing badly. The captain yelled that he had hit a log and assumed a cracked hull and was sinking. We grabbed...

New boat - New Avatar - Old member

So, went for a cruise on Rhino, the Jarvis Newman, with folk from our marina last weekend, got back and one of the guests made me an offer we couldn't refuse. So pending the normal BS associated with selling a boat, we will be putting rod holders onto the back of Baobab, our Bayliner 4788. So...

    Westerbeke low voltage

My Westerbeke 12.5 KVA, brushless generator is only putting out 102 volts. I have checked the rpm which is fine at 1850 no load rpm. The rectifier also checked out. The guide suggests hooking up a 12 volt battery and a bulb to check the diodes in place. This test indicates 4 of the 6 are bad...

    2 bodies - 5 still missing

2 bodies recovered from Mobile Bay, Alabama - CNN.com When we checked the weather yesterday and saw how bad it could get, we ran a few extra lines took down the canvas etc. Amazes me that they actually allowed a regatta when conditions are like this. Not all the boats involved however were...

    Galverston area marina recommendations

We are in the process of upgrading from a 32 foot, twin gas go fast to a 46 foot diesel trawler. The only marina we have used for full time mooring, is the Blue Dolphin. As the new (to us) trawler will take almost 4 hours to get out of the bay, this marina is no longer convenient and we would...
