    Grounding Solar

Do I need to ground the solar panel frames to the engine block? There is a ground screw on the Victron MPPT charge controller, I assume I ground that to the engine block as well. In the disconnect box between the panels and the controller, there is a ground lug. Even though there is just a pos...

    Generator is Gone

Thanks for everyone’s input on my original post. It seems there are many suggestions and advice I can rely on in making decisions regarding power. Also, thanks for the offer of a 2020 3.5 kw generator, close by, for $7,600.00. But I’m just not comfortable spending that kind of money on a 37...

    Generator is Gone

I have also entertained the idea of solar. Since I have a sizable hardtop i think I can fit a couple of fairly large ones up there. It was always in the back of my mind.

    Generator is Gone

I do have an AC but I have no illusions of being able to run it without a generator. I have only used it on shore power. I think the Honda will borderline power the AC. I have to check the documentation. I do not think this boat warrants the expense of a new generator install. i just don't...

    Generator is Gone

This fall I removed my generator. It was a 3.5kw, single cylinder Volvo diesel powered noise maker that shook the boat when it ran. I'm surprised it lasted this long, but I did enjoy the convenience although I hardly used it the last couple of years. Here is what I have: I have a house bank...

    Vee vs Walk Around Berth

The vee berth in my Mainship 34 is the one thing I don’t like about it. When the filler is in it’s very difficult to get out of the berth. When the filler is not in, each side is too narrow for me and I never get a good sleep. It’s too high so we have to have a step stool there all the time...

    Linking GPS to Radio

Good memory Cigatoo! I set the baud rate on both ports to 4800. Gdavid, I messed around with the settings on both ports. It’s been a few weeks since I did it but I’ll try again this weekend.

    Linking GPS to Radio

I have both manuals and I did look at these exact schematics and I probably guessed right, I’m not sure, with no joy. I’ll have to try it again. Someone told me that my old GPS may not even be putting out any info and that I can test it with an ohm meter. Is that true?

    USB outlets ghosting loads

Won’t the “cigarette lighter” socket ever go away? Has anyone ever put a cigarette lighter in their 12v receptacle on their boat? I would rather update the 3 I have to USB ports. That’s all they are ever used for anyway

    Linking GPS to Radio

So all the responses above are from very knowledgeable people that seem to have been through this themselves. I knew my post would get quality responses. But would anyone like to give me which color wire on the radio goes to which color on the GPS?

    Linking GPS to Radio

Ok...it’s a very old Garmin GPS, a 182C and a Standard Horizon GX1600. It’s just not a priority to upgrade the GPS since I cruise mostly in familiar waters, in site of land and when I do venture out further I use my iPad with Navionics loaded. No AIS, I just want to be able to use the DSC if I...

    Linking GPS to Radio

I just acquired a new Standard Horizon VHF radio and I would like to link it to my old Garmin GPS. The manuals both say they are NMEA 0183 compatible. I spent some time trying to link them up to no avail. Any suggestions?

Need more space on the positive terminal of house bank

These are the cables I used when I upgraded both battery banks. Two pairs of group 31 AGM’s from East Penn Manufacturing (DEKA). Plenty of places to bolt on connections.

    Alternator

Late last season the needles on both my tachs, bridge and lower helm, started bouncing. This season neither work and my the gauge says that I am only charging at around 10 volts. There does not seem to be any adverse effects on my batteries. I’m thinking I should get my alternator bench...

Air Conditioning size for 1983 Mainship 34

Thanks for all the very useful replies. I was leaning towards the 16,000 btu unit. Chris K, did you install your unit where the waste receptacle is beside the fridge or did you install it in the cabinet on the port side in the saloon?

Air Conditioning size for 1983 Mainship 34

Seriously considering installing AC on my boat. I know there are cheaper ways to get cool on these boats but I want to install marine AC. My question is what size? 16,000 BTU or is 12,000 enough? I also have only a 3.5kw genset, but I don’t think I would be running the AC with it.

How do you use your "classic" Mainship 34?

How do you use your "classic" Mainship 34? We can’t seem to use ours enough, due to the wife’s health concerns, work or other obligations. We do as many weekends as we can at anchor or mooring. 3-4 days at Block Island in September happened every year except last year. This year we...
