    What bedding should I use?

I have a GB that has a PVC piano hinge on the center windshield (for opening). The hinges only last for several years before breaking and needing replacement. Mine is there. What should I use to bed the new hinge? Silicone is not allowed on the boat! Sikiflex, ???

    It finally happened to us

We took our boat for an over-night trip on a remote spot on the Napa River in California. We pulled to the side of a channel in shallow water. The tides were negative at the time of anchoring; only about six feet below our keel. We laid out about a 6:1 chain rode and set it in reverse. The...

    Frigoboat Refrigeration

My 33-year old coldplate refrigeration system by Grunert needs to be replaced. I’m throwing way too much good money at it every year and am not getting positive returns. Recently, I was talking to a marine refrigeration technician, and he recommended Frigoboat systems. It involves removing...

    VHF Antenna Question

I’m going to replace one of my ancient VHF radios. I’m probably going to purchase a radio capable of receiving AIS. Should I get an antenna that is engineered for VHF as well as AIS? Like the Shakespeare 5225-XT-AIS?

    Dauntless and Mexican Earthquake

Richard, I noticed the epicenter of yesterday's 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico isn't too far from Dauntless (on the hard). Is she ok? Also, have any other forum members been affected by the quake?

    Ken Loh

Just got word that Grand Banks has parted ways with Ken Loh. Ken was employed by GB for years. He was always very responsive to our GB-related questions and a wealth of knowledge through the years. I, for one, will miss him. More evidence that GB is quickly sinking into memories' depths.

    California boating card

I, for one, am glad to see this. Starting January 1, 2018 we'll phase in a demonstration of boating knowledge. We'll have to show a bit of proficiency to operate a boat. Right now, anyone in California can operate a boat. All they need is a checkbook! Q: When will operators be required to have...

    Neglected Risers

Mahalo Moi has two Cat 3208 naturals. My engine temperatures have always been spot on. Both engines run between 175 and 185 degrees F. A few months ago, one of my port engine risers developed a pin-hole leak; spitting raw water all over the engine room. The riser had corroded through after 30...

    Replaced fuel tanks

The topic of fuel tank replacement comes up on the forum from time to time. Now it's my turn. Last October, I detected a small amount of fuel in the bilge of my GB42. I use red-dyed diesel so it's easy to see! I looked at every possible angle, nook and cranny where the fuel might be leaking...

    Earthquake on the water

I've lived in California all my life and experienced numerous earthquakes. However, this morning was the first while floating. My SO and I were in our marina sleeping when the earthquake occured. We think it was about 03:20 hours and lasted about 15 to 20 seconds. The sound and feel in the...

    CA Delta Water Export Issues

I don't mean to be the "downer" here. But, enjoy the Delta while you can. Because once the proposed legislation-immune twin tunnels are built, which will convey water from Sacramento to Tracy (the beginning of the California Aqueduct) and on to southern California, the Delta, as we know it, will...

    What boating is really...

A friend put this up on another forum. I thought it fits here as well. Power boats or blow boats...doesn't matter!

    Fresh water system trouble

My fresh water system slowly looses pressure and must recharge somewhat frequently (about every 30 minutes or so). Until recently the system would only need to pressure up when water was being used in the galley or heads. When this happened a couple of years ago, I had a leak in one of the...

Has anyone heard if a 2013 boat calendar is being published this coming year? I enjoyed 2012 as we had quite a few member's boats presented. Ray Muldrew

    Mark's Dinghy

Mark, I found the perfect dink. The one you've been lusting over. Come over tonight and we can grab a couple of those pesky steers in the pasture behind my house and you can trade something for Al's outboard. You'd have the only one of its kind in the Delta.

Even the California Highway Patrol has a boat...

...and they also have the ability to run it aground! I captured this photo last Tuesday near Port Chicago Navel Weapons Depot in California's Suisun Bay. The tide was ebbing so they were there for quite a while. The channel is narrow through that area of Suisun Bay. The US Coast Guard keeps...

    California Delta, Vallejo, Pittsburg, Atioch

July 2, 2012: Vallejo: $3.899 Pittsburg: $3.799 Antioch: $4.299 I fueled at Vallejo where I keep Mahalo Moi. Tenants receive a 5% discount. I paid $3.509 per gallon. Red dyed, off-road diesel (no California tax). As I write this, I realize that the attendant gave us a 10% discount...

    Hauling-out

The first time I have used a rail system to haul Mahalo Moi for bottom paint. I have only used a travel-lift in the past. The last travel-lift haul-out caused some damage to a rub rail so I wanted to try something different. Very pleased with the job.
