cheap idea for a bilge pump switch

I agree I installed 8 years ago an electronic one. No movable parts, so no sticking. One advantage is that it takes some time to activate and deactivate thus not activating with water moving in the bilge as your boat moves. I think is one of the most important safety components in a boat, and to...

    Pasarelle folding from in-board

this is very beautiful and impressive, but for side board folding. I am frustrated, as being a retired engineer i did not find easily a solution. I am thinking in making a wood model and play with forces and ropes... thank you very much

    Pasarelle folding from in-board

Hi, I have this pasarel in my boat, which results very heavy. I want to explore the possibility to recover it from the transom, with the ropes, folding it vertically, as just hanging straight from the mast is not very esthetic. Do you have any idea of design mechanism for recover with ropes or...

    Teak handrails?

Epifanes High gloss. Stands but requires a coat every year for gloss particularly if you are in tropical area Very important if possible to reach close to 1mm thickness. This forces from bare wood to 5-7 coats. as you reach more coats it becomes darker. And a lot of patience

    Tracing wire runs

You have to do it with your tester and a long cable. 1.- set your tester to the "beep" position and test both poles. 2.- attach one of the poles to one probe. 3.- disconnect the cable to test from his position and attach the second probe. 4.- without tension (disconnect main switch) try...

    Engine Start/Stop

Hi, In order to avoid to start de engine with the gearbox engaged, there is a lever on the side of the B&W activated by the clutch cable which activates a switch. Check the position with an electric tester. This should be good only for starting, not for stopping.

    Bilge Pump wiring options

I would not have an off position. You can use the braker instead of an OFF position for testing, etc. Do you have beepers when the float switch activates? this is important. I have also a cycle counter, to see if I am not in the boat for days, if something has been wrong in the bilge.

    guest´s kids on board

The reason why I opened this thread is the following: Two years ago my neighbor was having visitors with kids. I was watching. He was in the fly and started the engines. An adult was there with a kid about 4 on his legs. The skipper came down to release the ropes, and suddenly in the fly...

    guest´s kids on board

I had some scaring experiences on guest´s kids on board, in particular when they try to replicate what skipper is doing in the helm... Do you have experiences on this?, which is the best way to avoid such risks? Many times guests act with their kids as if they would come to your house and they...

    Teak bungs black marks

Thanks again, What I did really was to subsitute brass fasteners by ss fasteners after re-drilling to gain space for the bungs. Maybe the point is that I used carpenter white glue, which is enough for retention but obviously not for sealing. I will do some testing, as this is an interesting...

Talk me out of a GB.

I agree with all comments, Just to add the sensitivity to rolling, very in particular when mooring. I have Magma stabilizers for that purpose, very efficient. Also the deck under rain water does not rinse adequately. You need to ballast the transom if you want to correct. Look to the aging...

Advice on experience with Vetus water trap mufflers with a 120hp Ford Lehman

Yes, I installed this two years ago, There is a new model for 90 mm Diameter which apparently is more efficient, but is longer than my ones in length, check your space in transom lazarette.
