Operating Cost of Single versus Twins

Not trying to get too far off topic - but one question that came to mind: is it practical to run a twin-equipped boat with just one of the engines, especially if all you want to do is trawler speeds. You could just alternate engines to equalize run-times. I have heard of catamaran owners doing...

    Is this hull ID legit?

Thanks for providing more insight - it definitely makes me feel better!

Thanks so much! This makes me feel a lot better!

    Is this hull ID legit?

That gives me two places to look! :) Thanks for the replies!

    Is this hull ID legit?

That could certainly explain it. Maybe OA had multiple importers they used to import their yachts and Sturgeon Bay was one of them. I just wish I could hear from at least one other OA owner who had a HIN that started with TUY. :) Thanks for the link!

    Is this hull ID legit?

I tried calling them - it just transfers you to a local dealership (e.g. Marine Max) who could not tell me anything about a boat this old. :(

    Is this hull ID legit?

Both the USCG and Maryland online searches for this yacht have the "TUY" hull ID listed in their results. My biggest concern is if there is a possibility the boat was a salvage and someone created a new HIN (the one currently on the boat). If so, all the subsequent paperwork would agree with...

    Is this hull ID legit?

My wife and I are looking at a 1990 OA 42 Sedan Bridge. When we saw the hull ID (see image attached) it raised a flag to us because: 1. The HIN is not etched into the hull but is instead etched onto a plate that is attached to the hull. I've read this is acceptable, but is this common on...

    Boat buying nightmares

I just called a broker in Maryland (today) about a listing on Yachtworld that had been there for nearing 2 months. She said "Oh, is that still on there - that's been sold for weeks!". As I was about to ask if they had any other inventory, she just hung up! No good-bye, no what am I in the...

Would you buy without a contract?

Our thoughts exactly! If things went bad - the only winners would have been attorneys! We walked and got our deposit returned so everything worked out as best as could have been hoped for. Except we are now back looking again!!

Would you buy without a contract?

Me too!! I want so bad to be able to reach out to the sellers and find out if any of what we were told by the broker regarding what they said was actually true!

Would you buy without a contract?

We put 10% down - not a "trivial" amount on a $110K boat. However, even a boilerplate YBAA Purchase & Sale agreement has so much more protection (for all parties) built in than a series of emails and texts. One example: what happens if the seller backs out after the survey and the buyer has...

Would you buy without a contract?

Thanks again Rufus, but as I stated in my original question (post #1) and also in my reply to your initial response (post #19), the initial offer agreement (not a P&S) had our offer price and basic stipulations that it was pending a hull survey/diesel inspection/sea trial/etc. Again, the...

Would you buy without a contract?

The money is in escrow per the original agreement. I have written confirmation from the broker that the money is in escrow and will be refunded tomorrow. Patiently waiting!

Would you buy without a contract?

I don't think so because the initial offer letter (the one-page document) clearly stated that the sale would be dependent on a hull survey, diesel engine survey and sea trial. But again, the broker said the seller outright stated they wanted to keep their options open in case a better offer...

Would you buy without a contract?

Thanks for the reply - but the broker was very adamant that the sellers were not willing to sign any contract. They even told the broker they wanted to keep their options open if a better offer came in before closing. I all but pleaded with the broker to get them to agree to a contract - to...

Would you buy without a contract?

You are correct. The initial (and only) "contract" we ever saw was a single-page generic write-up with general terms of the offer - but no dates of any kind and nothing like a typical P&S agreement. We even asked about it because another boat we looked at had us sign the P&S before anything...

Would you buy without a contract?

Thank you to everyone for your replies! It definitely seems like this not the "normal" way of doing business - which is what I was trying to confirm. All of this is new to us so we wanted to make sure we weren't just being "sticklers"! We have notified the broker of our decision to rescind...

Would you buy without a contract?

We are in a dilemma and need advice. We put an offer on a boat, which was accepted. The offer letter was basically just that - a one-page form that had our names (the buyers) and the brokerage, but nothing about the sellers. It had our offer price and basic stipulations that it was pending a...

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Thanks for the recommendations - any of those areas look great. Unfortunately we won't get to be full time live-aboards until near the end of this year, so we will have to commute from our home near Harrisburg, PA to where ever we end up docking her. We've checked with one marina in the...

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Baltimore is where we intend to keep the boat. Philly is a possibility but Baltimore is only an hour and a half away from where we live. Unfortunately, there is nothing near Camp Hill since the Susquehanna River is not navigable that far up!

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Thanks so much to everyone who responded! Our offer on the boat was accepted this morning :thumb:  so we will now be moving forward with the survey/diesel inspection/sea trial! So much to get done! I am sure I am going to have lots of questions as we move forward in this process but I...

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Wow! Thank you to everyone for the quick replies and the helpful tips! I am not sure why the photos uploaded sideways - they don't show up that way on my computer. A survey will definitely be part of the plan if our offer is accepted. Looking through old posts it looks like around...

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Hi everyone, My wife and I are new to the forum - and new to yacht buying! We are looking at a 1999 Mainship 350 and upon our first visit I took the following pics of the hull since the boat is currently on the hard. Is all this "pitting" and "flaking" something to be worried about or is...
