    New fuel tank location (diesel)

Why not remove the old tank? I removed two tanks from my 45 CHB. each 130 gallons. Had a welder come in and cut them in two. They could also be cut using a rotary type tool. Must gas free but that is easy. I did it myself. CCC

    Removing teak decks

Teak deck covering In checking the prior posts I note several questions have arisen about repairs to teak decks. I covered this extensively in an article that I wrote for PASSAGEMAKER magazine and published in 1998. It was also posted to this list. Briefly I did not remove the outdoor teak...

Sometimes the Ditch (AICW) is a better choice

I first read of this in the commercial marine press. This was a disaster in the making from leaving Cape May,NJ. As the trip goes, left in Dec on the Atlantic head south, several mistakes here. Ran aground coming into a port in Va. Leave again heading south, ran OUT of fuel, poor planning...

    Removing teak decks

covering teak decks Has anyone covered a teak deck? In a word YES, and it worked great. No regrets. This was covered on this site several decades ago , at LENGTH, and when I sold the boat many years after the project deck was still fine. No regrets, covered it with "pickup truck" bed...

    Fuel tank leaks and baffles

I installed inspection hatches on the sides of 4 of my 130 gal diesel tanks. Cut the holes and cut a larger piece of steel for the cover. Drilled and tapped the holes for the bolts. Used diesel proof material to make the gaskets. Worked great, still there when I sold the boat 10 plus years...

    Decent horn for boat

I did this and it worked great. Purchased a cheap "pancake" compressor from Harbor Frieght for less than a $100 , mounted it in the engine room, plumbed it to the horn. It is 120v but it runs a few minutes once a week or so. Also put a T in the line, now I have compressed air when needed...

Two questions regarding the Great Loop

Two good questions Cap. My wife and I did the Great Circle Cruise the loop as many say in 5 seasons. We did not miss much!. At the end of each season we left the boat in a yard where ever we stopped, had it hauled and shrink wrapped. One or two seasons we did not know exactly where we would...

To have or not to have a pilothouse?

I am way late to this discussion so here are my REASONS, for purchasing a p/h boat. Note that i had one, see the avatar, for 25 years and put thousands of hours on it, the boat was not a dock queen and my fenders were all severly scarred! I subscribe to virtually every annunciated reason...

    Marine Traders Unite!

Good question about Marine Traders. Do join MTOA which is the original Marine Trader Organization and as one has stated, changed its name to Marine Trawler as well over 50% of the membership have boats other than Marine Traders, that included me at the time. Take a look at this list and you will...

Cutlass bearing scoring - how much is too much?

prop shaft repair Do not fall for that must replace shaft and not repair bunk. That shaft can be repaired take it to a MACHINE SHIP not necessarily a "marine machine" shop what ever that may be. I had the shafts on my boat, see the pic. , done 3 or 4 times over the 25 years that I had it and...

    Reverse Great Loop?

Jeff, Nov and Dec, is good for the Gulf ICW, our "winter" is usually Jan and Feb. That is the full article. I assume that you will start in Canada and come down the Ohio. Actually a better route to the Gulf is down the Tenn-tom than the Ms. we did the Ms. to get to the Arkansas R. and...

    Reverse Great Loop?

I went UP the Tenn-Tom 4 times over the years all the way to the Ohio river one time when I locked into it and then down to the Ms. river to go west on the Ar. all the way to Tulsa. Up the Cumberland and Little Tn. as well. This in the trawler that you see. Go for it. Went down the Ms. all the...

The Great Loop- What would YOU ask the experts?

My wife and I did the GREAT CIRCLE CRUISE now called the Loop. Our boat was the 45 CHB that you see. We were almost always the largest boat. That is really not needed a 32 would suit us just fine. We did it in multiple YEARS, 5 to be exact. Doing the trip, 5500 miles in a year/season is the norm...

Perkins Diesel has a very loud banging sound

Not likely that you can fix from what you describe. Make sure key is off, better yet, disconnect the battery and slowly turn the engine over with a wrench. Listen for the crunch sound and stop immediately. That being said, now remove the head, this is a job for a mechanic. period. Been there...

    Propane storage on Taiwan builds

On the boat that you see in my avatar the two propane tanks were stored on the aft deck in the cockpit, they were canvas covered only. They would drain overboard if leakage occurred, which never happened in the 25 yrs that I had the boat. They were the large bottles not the "bar b q" size. CCC...
