If you have a link I'd love to see it! I'm guessing its the same one.

Be bold! Glad to kick some numbers around. I've come up with a rough scrap value around $10k. There is nothing of value in the house - just lumber - so really it is the hull steel, machinery, and wiring. I'm thinking closer to $20k.

There is a steam driven one on the market currently. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me though! I’m big on firing up and going somewhere!

The gearbox is a link-belt out of a crane. 70’s vintage. The transmission outputs to a little driveshaft, into the box, and reduces the rpms. That small gear you see up front is (I believe) for changing from forward to reverse.

My inlaws have an Albin 36 on Lake Ontario, and I'm originally from Alberta, so we know all about cold winters and pulling boats out of the water. It is a steel barge. Similar units are approx. 30T. Typically these are 1/4" plate with additional thickness at the bow. I don't own this yet...

    Perkins Rebuild Cost

Thanks Solly, that’s encouraging. Understood on the price. The only way this works is if I start at scrap value and don’t pay much more than that. It’ll be an extensive refit and not cheap, but definitely doable provided the initial outlay isn’t silly

Appreciate the input. I'd definitely get it checked over first. Full rebuild is worst case scenario, but needs to be planned for.

Great info guys, thanks. Got an email from TAD. A reman 6.354 with full marine cooling components is ~$13k, including $2k core charge. So it seems like I could knock the price down by not using any marine stuff. Not sure how many hours on the engine. I'd probably start with full lube oil...

I suppose the real question here is if I’m going to be spending $20k would I be better off swapping this for a 6bt? Or even a 4bt. The guys I’ve spoke to with similar sized boats say 150hp is all I’d need and that this is overpowered at 220hp

Sorry for the double post. The forum didn't post the first immediately and so I reposted after a day as I thought it was lost.

That’s great info Pete, thanks. Provided I get it scoped, the bores are good, and it’s more of a top end + accessories, what do you think it would cost? I’m not adverse to doing it right; just want to go in with the worst case in mind

I’m looking at buying a paddlewheeler, with this engine fitted. Couldn’t find a data plate. All I know is that it’s 220hp and runs, but needs work. I’m looking for rebuild / replacement costs so I can come up with a reasonable offer. Also the model so I can do a little more research. Has some...

    Perkins Rebuild Cost

Hi All, I'm looking at purchasing a 52ft paddlewheeler. More details in the Welcome Mat forum: https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s53/paddlewheeler-ponchatrain-49601.html#post856581 I wasn't able to get the model number, but the main engine is a 220HP Perkins. It has a keel cooler fitted...

    Paddlewheeler on the Ponchatrain

Thanks for the warm welcome! To answer a few questions: While a paddlewheeler, this one is known more specifically as a stern wheeler. As opposed to a side wheeler, which would have a wheel either side. The hull is 52’ x 17’. Add the wheel and LOA is ~63’. Custom built between 1989 and 1991...

It’s got two main rudders aft of the wheel. This one seems to be lacking the monkey rudders that are normally installed forward of the wheel, which manage the astern handling.

The wheel pushes water. It’s driven by a Perkins 220hp diesel connected to a link belt gear box and chain drive. It’s flat bottomed and sails primarily on inland waterways. I know it’s not a trawler, but it’s a boat built for travel and adventure! I feel the spirit of it is in keeping with...

Hi Gang I am in process of purchasing a 52’ custom built paddlewheeler, for restoration and Liveaboard! It is a small, unique community of sailors but they don’t have a strong web presence, so I decided to join this forum as it seems to be full of likeminded folks! And I’m sure my...
