Update…5th season on the “new boat “ haven’t been on in quite a while. Still loving the old girl. Still haven’t got out of Lake Erie, but plan to. Maybe wait till retirement. Everything still works fine.

    SeaPipers - Why?

I like it. We have been planning on taking our boat from Ohio to Florida for annual winter cruising. As we get closer to making the move we are now considering a second boat for our summers here in Ohio. With this boat I could haul it back, and forth. It really doesn’t do what we want for...

Per OP archive Gulfstar 43 1977 Project in Ft Laudedale

We will be heading to Ft Lauderdale over new year. Would be interested taking a look. Any idea how bad a shape it actually is in? If she will run I would be interested.

to all 42' Uniflite Double Cabin Sedan owners w. diesel heat

Just a slight “whir” the blower is louder then the actual heater operation. No louder then a forced air furnace blower at home.

to all 42' Uniflite Double Cabin Sedan owners w. diesel heat

On my 74 the steps to the galley lift up for engine room access. The galley is starboard on the older ones not that that matters lol. Mine has a nice little storage area in the floor just foreword of the steps. I might go there under the floor with an adjustable vent. Yes it gets cold here on...

to all 42' Uniflite Double Cabin Sedan owners w. diesel heat

I have a 74. It has the original electric heat. The heater in the master warms the salon nicely if I leave the stateroom door open. Likewise with the foreword heater. I never even turn the salon heat on. I know you’re putting the diesel on, but I would use this info as a baseline for placement...

    Oil....

Oil is Oil! I have been maintaining Diesel engines most of my life. I have bought 3 new semi trucks that I was the only driver for the entire time owned. Each one had over 1 million miles when sold. I rotate between 3 different oils. As someone mentioned in an earlier post they all have...

    Restore Faded Engine Control Knobs

Nice job. I’m guessing it will fade quickly, but not to anything like you started with. A couple minutes with the polish a few times a year should keep you in good shape.

    Engine wiping oil

Clean the engine with whatever works, then apply clear spray paint. Leaves a nice shine, protects from corrosion, and won’t cause particles to stick after it’s dry. Also will only smell for an hour, or two after you spray it!

    Past subject: repower older trawlers

When you are ready let me know. My brother in law has a shop. They do cummins, Perkins, and a couple others. They do a lot of warranty work. He could find you just about anything in short order. They have been around forever, so he hooked me up with a ton of spares for my old 903’s. I have a...

Run a couple cooling tubes down either side of your keel. Get out the saw, and start hacking fiberglass. Local truck stop for chrome smoke stacks, and your ready to go. No need for fancy exhaust manifolds. The ones that came on it will do just fine: lol!

    Past subject: repower older trawlers

You can find those engines here in the us. They put them in a lot of things. I know of 2 with about 300hrs on them. They were power for hospital generators. Maintenance runs, and a couple emergency uses on each. I would put them in any displacement hull under 60,000

Thanks, and yes I am going to “molest” her a bit. Will be replacing most exterior parts. I will however try to reuse what is there. Radar is ancient. Old monochrome monitor, and all. I have the receipts for everything. I think it was installed late 80’s. The only new holes I plan are for a very...

Plenty of spares on board. Old mechanical diesels smoke a bit, that’s just the way it is. This one smokes less than most. 80degree day about 30 seconds then clears quickly. Cold day will smoke till it warms completely. She was a little neglected over the last couple years. Never abused, and...

I don’t know. Maybe going to pier 53. Not real happy with the Hoty people this season. Wish they didn’t own everything! LOL we actually talked about a seasonal dock at middle Bass. For the price it’s cheaper to keep it there, and ride the ferry over.

    Cummins diesels

I actually have access to quite a bit of Perkins stuff. My brother-in-law has been a Perkins dealer for years, and knows pretty much every old time Perkins guy in the country. If anyone needs parts let me know what you need. I can check for you. The grey market stuff won’t be cheap, but can...

She was just a bit neglected over the last couple years as her owners of 40 years had gotten into their 80’s. Mostly a dock queen for the last 3, or 4 years. I love that there was no hacking on anything. Not 1 hole in a deck that wasn’t factory. Tons of little things, but I’m working my way...

Hello! We are just about to buy our first boat!

Hello, and welcome. Honestly find a good deal on a boat that you can live with. 99% chance you’re first one won’t be your last. Buy something that works for you currently, and would be relatively easy to flip. In about 2 years you will actually know what you want/need far better than now. Btw I...

    Cummins diesels

Indeed. I have a Dodge cummins putting out nearly 600hp. Will it last? Hell no! Is it fun to drive? Hell yea! Point is there is a time, and place for everything. I was just offering up my 2 Lincoln’s as to what my thoughts were on the situation. LOL Btw my old 903’s are 2 1/2 times the...

    Cummins diesels

I’m not really thrilled with the 300hp rating. These engines were made for 200-250hp. Higher hp=less life. That being said they are great engines. Marinized variations can vary depending on as others have mentioned exhaust. Get them checked out. If they check good I wouldn’t worry about them to...

Time to start asking questions, 10 of them

Find a quality built boat that you like with good diesels. Once you have a good platform you can make it your own as you go. Quite honestly you will most likely end up moving to something else after you find your “real” needs, and wants. Btw Key West NAS has a marina.

Just an update! We got through a season up here on Lake Erie. I absolutely love this boat. Of course a 45 year old boat that has been a dock queen for the last several years is going to have some issues, but mostly nothing big. We have been spinning those big diesels at about 1200rpm that gives...
