    Internet on the water

Here is a very good video explaining how Starlink works. A bit long but well worth the time.

1979 42' Grand Banks Electrical System

In our boat, which is one year older than yours, the neutral bus is more of a bundle. For us, the AC wiring is all on the starboard bulkhead ahead of the engine. If you follow the wires up toward the ceiling, you will likely find that the wires ago up in a bundle and end with them all connected...

    1995 GB Sole Refurbish?

I just did this a few weeks ago our 42 year old GB. See https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=883453&postcount=3 I pulled all the hardware and polished everything including the screw heads. :) PM me if you want more details.

    Refinish Salon Floor

We just did our salon floor last weekend. I will admit that I cheated a bit. A friend who does wood floors for a living came up and did most of the work. He also brought professional tools and talent. Total time was about 6 hours over two days. Sanding and scraping the floor to bare wood was...

    Good news!

My work commute is short. Just down the hall. :) Normally, it is a plane back and forth from Seattle to Los Angeles every week. I haven't been at home this much in ten years.

    Converting Fluorescents to LEDs

I just replaced the 48 48" flourescent tubes in our garage with Hyperikon LED tubes from Amazon. About $10 each. https://amzn.to/35volng I pulled the ballast out of all the fixtures and rewired them. It took about 5-8 minutes per fixture. I have four remaining tubes to replace on the boat...

    Interior lighting

We have the same fixtures. The original 12" flourescents were pathetic. We replaced them with 12" LED light strips from Lunasea. Here is a post I did about it in 2012. More Light, Less Power | M/V Archimedes – An Old Grand Banks 42. They have worked flawlessly since we installed them...

    Seattle ferry tips?

Both are easy to walk on. The walk on fare is about $8.50 round trip. The Bainbridge ride is 35 minutes. The boat is a bit bigger. More to do on the Bainbridge side. The Bremerton ride is 1 hour and a more scenic trip. I don't think there is as much to do once you get to Bremerton, though. If...

Owner's phone number displayed on boat

We hang a laminated 8.5x11" sign in the dockside window when we are not on the boat. "In case of EMERGENCY, call XXX Anytime ... Day or Night." For a number of years we were some distance from the boat so I use a local google voice number. Didn't want to give anyone the idea that we are not...

    Water filtration - under counter

A few years ago, we added water filters after the tanks just before the line tees to the hot water tank. This filters all the water we use. It's a bit overkill, but I used two Pentek Big Blue housings. The first has a 5 micron sediment filter. The second filter is a .5 micron carbon block...

    Grand Banks Classic Davits

We found early on that if it is not easy and convenient we will be less likely to use it. Our boat came to us with a 12' double hull fiberglass hull Flexboat/8hp outboard on Weaver davits. That configuration was a pain to tilt up and down using the installed ratchet mechanism. It was hard enough...

    Heads Up Alaska Boats

According to the link ... Exemptions: Registered elsewhere A boat with a valid registration from another state or country that is not operated more than 90 consecutive days in Alaska. That should cover most visiting boats.

Welcome. We are just down the road from you. Which marina in Poulsbo? We are at Liberty Bay. We tried to get into Kingston, but at the time were told they had an eight year wait.

Lake Union Fireworks - Only A Fool Would Go

    - Are dinghys allowed in the lake before the fireworks? Ideally I'd want to get a spot early and set anchor, but I'd need to go grab people. Is this allowed? To my knowledge, there are no restrictions on dinghies or any boats buzzing around the lake. There is a 7 knot (I think) speed limit. -...

    Solo Cruising

My wife would not like me going out on the boat without her. She loves being on the boat. At the same time, I work in Los Angeles and am there four days a week so we are apart much of the time anyway. Been doing that for fourteen years. Not ideal, but it works. We've been married 38 years now. :)

Lake Union Fireworks - Only A Fool Would Go

Lake Union for the 4th is a zoo. But it can be a lot of fun too. Get there real early. Before noon. Then be prepared to fend off and make sure folks don't anchor right next to you. We had people wanting to tie up to us. Here is a post I wrote about it a few years ago. Lake Union for the the 4th...

    Bright Work Cost?

In Seattle, I would expect to pay $80-110 an hour. I would consider taking the boat to Canada. The labor rate there will be closer to $50-60 US. For our old 42, we were quoted $25k for everything. We got most of that for $13k in Sidney.

    Photography especially while boating

I enjoy wildlife and nature photography. I was into photography in high school. Rolled my own film canisters from 100 foot bulk rolls, developed photos in the bathroom and so on. Digital is much better. I bought one of the early Kodak one meg (640x480) cameras in 2000 and that was it. I always...

    Cruising Northern BC,bears & guns

We went with the Oceanlight folks. The guide had been doing this over 20 years there. And once we had drifted up to the log, and the cubs came to visit, we were pretty much committed to staying there until they left.
