    Packing gland question.

Thanks for the advice. I thought of that and tried shortening the old hose that slipped over the shaft tube but the little voice in my head started screaming for me to replace the 40+ year old components while on the hard instead of panicking somewhere in the Chesapeake Bay.

    Packing gland question.

Last year our packing gland started to leak. After repeated attempts to tighten, add, or replace packing a close inspection revealed that the prop shaft was pitted and that no amount of packing would stop a steady dripping leak. We ordered a replacement prop shaft and installed a dripless...

We agreed that white cedar would make a neat wall covering. Before we installed the planks my wife put on two coats of sealer.

BTW a laser level is worth the cost to make your life easier. We decided we want to add shelves so we did a mock up to agree on the depth and height. We agreed on 20” from the berth and 10” extending from the hull on the ends as it creates at least a one foot deep shelf in the curve of the bow.

After tacking the furring strips to the hull we inserted foam insulation and cut aluminum bubble insulation.

Where was I. We have new updates. We scrapped the idea of putting padded vinyl in the berthing area and pulled out the luaun panels and prepped the walls for furring strips.

After months of waiting for our turn in the canvas shop backlog we have canvas. We selected strata glass instead of the isenglass . We hope that we don’t regret spending the extra money as it was more than the insurance replacement reimbursement.

Since the cold weather delayed our use of epoxying fiberglass we started making luaun templates for the interior dash and berthing area bulkheads.

We did buy and install the soft starter. It worked for the first 3 or 4 starts then it wouldn't start anymore. The generator would trigger an overcurrent when the compressor turns on. I don't know if the soft start went bad or if the generator is faulty. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the problem?

I built a wood frame to make a fiberglass form for a cockpit cover. With help from friends we did a dry fit to the trawler to see where we need to make adjustments.

The old splash screen or wind screen needed replacement. After cleaning the old stainless steel mounting brackets and replacing the old hardware everything is aligned to receive the new Lexan. The pictures show the old plexiglass.

I learned that to remove the prop shaft on a 1978 trawler you need to remove the rudder. The reason is that the rudder shaft pivot point is directly in line with the prop shaft. I noticed that the newer boats have the rudder installed slightly off center to enable prop shaft removal while the...

When we put the trawler in in the spring the prop shaft packing didn’t leak. It didn’t leak on the 1st or 2nd multi day trips. However, after the 3rd trip it started to drip and no matter how much it was tightened it leaked. I took the packing nut apart and the Stainless steel prop shaft was...

The marina owner was gracious to let me build a dinghy davit / bench seat which we installed at the end of the dock. It’s nice to get the dinghy out of the water when not using it.
