Riding sail for GB 42 Classic

We made a combination steading/riding sail for our Pilgrim 40 that is somewhat marginally effective. When using a steading sail while motoring the "wings" are folded aft and secured at the clews (triple clewed sail), when at anchor and used as a riding sail they are spread using removable...

Looking for this exact model snubber.

Sweetail | Ammortizzatori da ormeggio made in Italy Italian website but pretty much shows exactly that model. Google Lens is your friend for locating items when you don't know their name. I don't work for Google. :)

Is double anchor roller the answer

If you can't find an off the shelf system that suits, it isn't too difficult to engineer your own as we did, explained in the link below. Lots of CNC water jet machines around that simply need a CAD file to cut the parts...

Big insurance increase from Geico/Boat US

Post #144 indicates that if you are in Maryland Geico must maintain the coverage from an independent agent for two years. I tried to "reason" with Geico again concerning our canceled policy to no avail for our 40 foot Pilgrim. They flat out were not interested. We have another policy with...

Big insurance increase from Geico/Boat US

We have had a policy with GEICO through an independent agent for six years. The independent agent thought he would be able to simply roll over our policy to Clear Springs Insurance. That turned out not to be the case. GEICO is terminating our policy through the independent agent as of 12/7...

    Anchor ball displayed

Have one and use it, picture taken in Pelican Bay on the west coast of Florida (Charlotte Harbor). We have occasionally been seen underway with it deployed with the anchor light still on. :o

    FinDelta Anchoring Sail

We made a triple clewed steadying sail for our Pilgrim as it tacks around at anchor like crazy. It seems to dampen the action a bit but nothing will keep a Pilgrim from hunting other than being tied up at a dock. It would help if the mast was set further aft. We couldn't figure out an...

    Goodbye

I have been a member since 10/06/07 so I guess I am a veteran with probably the fewest number of posts (this makes 61). While I look at this site almost every day I tend to resist posting for lots of reasons.

    Repowering our 30 ft Sundowner

The engine, gearbox and electical panels were lumped together in a single quote. I believe I changed to a heavier duty gearbox which cost an additional $700 as well as the $500 for the longer wiring harness which upped the cost to the $23k.

    Repowering our 30 ft Sundowner

We repowered our Pilgrim 40, switching from a 108 hp Westerbeke to a 75 hp Beta Marine. All the details are here: http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/d/r/drf6/Liberty_Project_1/Engine_Replacement.htm It's a long read as other projects were interspersed with the engine swap but the final sea...

    Start Battery source in Jacksonville?

If your start battery is in the same locations as ours (starboard side, outboard) there is no way I would want to wrestle an 8D in or out of that location. We have a pair of group 24's in series. If you are not in a hurry, you can get jumper wires from Marine Wiring, Boat Cable and Electrical...

Don't like difficult-to-read boat name fonts

One of the previous owners did this and we haven't seen a need to change it (except the hailing port).

which would you pick, and why?

Either one is going to be a crap shoot engine wise. You don't really know how well those engines were maintained over the years. Maybe the low hour one was run an hour every two months, or was run for 200 hours the back in 84 and recently run for three hours when it was put up for sale. Maybe...

    4U2SEA (EZ2CY) Enclosures

Has anybody seen any enclosures made by 4U2SEA (supposed to be an updated version of EZ2CY)? The enclosure on our stern was done by EZ2CY back in the early 90’s and while still serviceable in a round-about way we are interested in replacing it, of course modifying it to suit our specific needs...

    Nova Kool Refrigerator

We have a RFU9000 and it has worked flawlessly for the last two years. If we get lazy and don't defrost it when we should we need to turn the thermostat down to keep things cold. Then, after we defrost it, if we are not smart enough to re-adjust the thermostat, we will freeze items in the...

    Total and Reserve Power

At wide open throttle, maximum speed is 8 knots. This is down 1/2 knot from the max speed produced by the higher hp Westerbeke. Fuel consumption is exactly the same with either engine, 1.7 gallons/hour. The gearbox was chosen to produce the same shaft speed at cruise.

    Total and Reserve Power

We are a little late to this discussion but are one of the few who have re-powered with a smaller HP engine. Our 26,000 lb Pilgrim 40 was powered by a Westerbeke 108 C-6 (108 hp, marinized Kia bus engine) and needed replacement. Since we are a "full displacement" hull and use less than two...

    DIY Canvas Tips, Tricks, Recommendations

We have a Phaff 128 and found the Tenara thread to be the easiest and best thread we have ever used. Think monofilament line; it doesn't fuzz up at all leaving the guides and tensioner nice and clean. We didn't change the bobbin tension from when we used the polyester thread, only minor...

    Dingy motor

We have had and used our Torqeedo for a few years now with no issues. It propels our Bauer 10 dinghy at about 3.5 knots and at that speed the battery is good for about 10 miles on a charge. The batteries are slow to charge so we keep a spare on the boat. We like not having gas aboard and the...

    Westerbeke 108C-6 Oil Consumption

I gave that a try. With a stated 12 quart capacity I have let the level drop until I had measured only 9 quarts left in the pan during an oil change. It was still using oil.
