    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Exiting the canal without drama requires good data and careful planning. My 2 go-to data sources are ‘TidesNearMe’ and ‘Tides4Fishing’ websites. The first provides valuable detail on currents (search for current, not tide) and the second offers advanced data like tidal coefficients. Together...

Cat 3116, good, bad, problem areas

In my experience, 3116 @ 300hp has been a good engine. Smooth running and very low soot exhaust. One chronic problem is leaks around the oil cooler. The design relies on 2 o-rings that are easily twisted or dislodged during reinstallation. It’s not a big job to fix, just annoying when it recurs.

    Bar Harbor anyone?

Hope the OP took others advice and went to Northeast. They’re well set up for cruisers (showers, laundry, etc) The local convenience has block ice for $2.50! and there’s great access to hiking in Acadia. We were there in mid-August and just a heads up to cruisers up & down the ME coast, due to...

    "Downeast" boats at anchor

@OP, lots of interesting posts on this. A Back Cove, Sabre, etc. in the 40ft. range is certainly capable of providing comfortable cruising for extended periods. Cruised a lot on a 42 Sabre, now cruise a 35 lobster boat. At anchor, besides chin slap the biggest difference I notice is...

Long distance cruise with Volvo D6-350/Duoprop

As a diesel, the D6 should be up to mission with the usual caveat that it’s in good running order. Check out Boatdiesel.com for feedback on the D6’s reliability. The stern drive is likely the weaker link. The biggest enemy is all the heat generated by the various driveline offsets. I suggest...

    Glassing Over Through Hulls

I always have followed the West approach as Frosty noted. I like to start with a thin film of thickened epoxy (cabosil or milled fiber) on the dished out area. Next wet out and laminate your successively smaller patches on cardboard or a board. Really brush tap or squeegee out all the excess...

    Intermittent waste tank odor

jaredjensen - Does your Tecma head have a setting to leave water in the bowl? I just installed a marine elegance with a pvc discharge pipe pitched entirely to the holding tank. I elected to remove the joker valve right at the toilet since it reduced the pipe size, and -as noted- it will...

    V-Drives

If access to the drives or something else like the stuffing boxes is terrible, none of the v-drives advantages are worth it to a conscientious boat owner. Otherwise, another plus to v-drives is the engines can be on very soft mounts because the v-drives transfer all the prop power to the hull...

    Propeller shaft cutter

Razors vs. Spurs The shark relies on the line becoming stationary against the razor wheel at some point to saw through it. The prop can wind up 10-20ft. of slack line before the trap below puts a load on it slowing the line enough to be sawn through. On the other hand, spurs are like scissors -...

1935 65' Wooden Boat Hull Replacement options

Anyone who loves wooden boats should read this thread on the wooden boat forum. First, and perhaps foremost, the boat owner is a very gifted writer. (I’ve read it 3 different times) It chronicles an attempt to restore a classic Huckins in a remarkable way that captures the thrill of the dream...

    Milky Oil

When I read to OP’s post, I had the same thought. An overfilled water lift muffler backing water up into cylinders would cause hydrolocking. Also, there’s next to no way the water could seep past the rings unless they were terribly worn. I think you should be looking for another cause for the...

    Shrink wrap vs tarps.

Very true. Although it’s worth pointing out that a zipper door eliminates loose edges that can flutter in wind and it keeps out the birds, mosquitoes and dust. : )

    Shrink wrap vs tarps.

@ PasadenaPhil - Sounds like you’ve made your decision which is great. Last year, I bit the bullet and bought the equipment & supplies to do it myself. As Capt. Tom alluded to, I wanted to avoid any delays after cleaning the boat, be able to customize the enclosure so I can work inside...

Keeping hoses from sticking to barbs

Goto Harbor Freight or Amazon and get two sets of picks; small which has the diameter of a coat hanger and large which has the diameter of a pencil. Circle the pick 360-degrees around the hose and then twist the hose. It’ll break free every time. If then it won’t come off the barbs, use a heat...

    Cat 3116 turbo engine life

    Gary - I haven’t heard of a variable speed trans with 3116’s, but suppose anything is possible. I don’t have floscans or other fuel metering, but my estimated fuel economy is similar to Cat’s posted GPH specs below: (E Rating prop demand) 1800 - 4.2 2000 - 5.7 2200 - 7.5 2400 - 9.7 2600 - 12.2...

    Cat 3116 turbo engine life

gfr - Caterpillar’s 3116 never found the praise that it’s predecessor the 3208 did. However, it’s a good reliable engine at lower horsepower (<300hp) demand applications, and I have read reports of 10,000 hrs without major overhaul. I own one and have found it very fuel efficient and clean...

    CAT 3116 Transom Soot

Twistedtree - Thanks for the explanation. It fills in some gaps or misunderstandings that I have had while also explaining why overloading is viewed by some (like me) as bad across the powerband.

    CAT 3116 Transom Soot

Until I see data showing otherwise, the resources I trust say overpropped is overloaded throughout the entire poweband. Also, two 3116 owners on BoatDiesel have documented that their EGT’s are higher at 2200 than at 2400: the load on their engines is higher at the lower rpm. Operating below...
