    Purchase dilemma - keel delamination

Is it a single or twin? If it’s a single engine I might be concerned with a crack in the shaft log as a source for water ingress to the aft keel.

Port Townsend Winter Haul Out Adventure

Very cool boat. I’ve enjoyed watching all the improvements over the last 20+ years since it was next to me in Ballard. I believe it was Port Townsend that cut your boat in half to lengthen the boat in the middle correct?

The reason I ask is that a lot of us hear about our neighbors wanting to sell their boat before it ever hits the market. If you give us an idea of what you’re looking for, and budget, we can help out. There is a “wanted” chat for just that.

Newbie on his way to buy a trawler

Two really good YouTube channels to watch for perspective is Flying Coney and Sailing with the Wynns. They are at both ends of the spectrum. Old money pit and brand new, state of the art, sailboat. The Wynns just threw in the towel on their brand new sailboat due to all the issues. And it was...

Isn’t it standard practice for the buyer to lose the deposit if they choose to walk away for no good reason?

As a side note, if you ever buy a boat in the PNW, spend several months cruising the inside passage-known for some of the best year round boating in the world.

    Selling your boat yourself

That’s what I was thinking. A name brand boat with a great reputation (yours and your friends) will sell themselves.

    Selling your boat yourself

I’m guessing obtaining the paperwork/contract and individuals needed-escrow agent etc. helpful hints to sell like a recent survey etc.

Newbie on his way to buy a trawler

Welcome. Find out if the boat has balsa coring-I would bet it does for that era boat. There is no repairing rotted balsa. Only replacement. Are you a fiberglass expert? You mention doing the work yourself. With water stains on the inside, I’m guessing major coring damage along with lengthy...

    Mystery RPM limit

Just confirming. You stated the boat has twin engines. Are they both at identical rpm’s at WOT? I would want to hear an explanation from the previous owner about the discrepancies. If the boat was run at low speeds for years, the turbos could be soot encrusted, which could explain both engines...

Opinion wanted on an older steel trawler

The cat 3208N is rated for 15,000 hours conservatively. My surveyor expected it to last 30k hours before needing replaced. The boat you’re looking at has 3300k hours. Your concern about the age of the engine is the real debate. I’m no diesel mechanic, but Ive rebuilt gas engines. Seems to me the...

Really depends on the previous owner. A lot of times the boat will have added systems that improve a boat and/or improve the function- i.e. stabilizers, solar panels, fuel polishers, lithium batteries, etc.

Those threads could be 1 3/4 inch if boat was made for America. Looks like you’re measuring in metric. Maybe you have been looking at metric threads, which could be the problem.

Opinion wanted on an older steel trawler

Just watched that video. Very strange location for blistering/wet core. The manatee uses pvc coring, which is impervious to water. You are correct in that water has the potential to makes its way through any screw hole, window frame etc. Steel does have an early warning system-orange marks the...

You shouldn’t have to. Remove the three screws lift to access hose and hose clamp. Swap out.

$32 at Fisheries in Seattle. Colored caps help prevent the nightmare of wrong fluids in the tank as well.

    Interesting boats

A cool boat I was on in Anacortes. Aluminum and very fuel efficient. Look at this awesome Custom Long Distance Trawler I found on YachtWorld! https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/2007-custom-long-distance-trawler-9446779/

Opinion wanted on an older steel trawler

Not sure what you are referencing on the reputation of Krogen. Keep in mind the Manatee was the first model for Krogen and the hull shape changed with the 42s. My Manatee sold for 20k more than when it was brand new-almost 25 years earlier. Pretty good reputation to me. The whaleback is one of...

Opinion wanted on an older steel trawler

My previous boat was a Krogen Manatee (15 years). I’ve had my current steel boat for 7 years. My steel boat is exponentially less work and almost twice the size. This is all due to how well my steel boat was built. The teak and blisters on the Manatee were a constant struggle. I suspect the wood...
