Global cruiser concept - 25m stabilised monohull

This type of project is right up my ally and thinking so I will follow this thread with interest. The costs to build it would take everything I have and my age would preclude a long use of the boat.. I can appreciate and live vicariously through you. I might be making an assumption but my guess...

    Another Nubeee!?

1SeaSalt, the one thing that I don't see mentioned and it might be an issue in the age of boats you are looking at is financing. The magic number is 30 years. If a boat is under 30 years old, financing the boat is far easier with more options. Easier financing means a higher price on the...

Hello, new to power boats, old sail boat guy

BVrolky, given the additional information you have provided, think about looking at a Krogen 48 Whaleback. Everything is on one level except the pilot house and they are probably large enough to accommodate what you want.

    Staying fit while cruising

Exercise is definitely on our minds. We are setting out on a loop this summer and our needs are quite different. I can exercise riding a bike, walking fixing stuff on the boat and any number of curious activities. My wife is much more limited and very concerned about the aspects of exercise...

Hello, new to power boats, old sail boat guy

BVrolyk you don't say what you budget is. There are a lot of boats out there that might fit most of your wants list because your wants list is pretty generic. Where are you going to use it and how far do you plan on taking it? Still pretty tough to get a Grandma/Grampa boat and a kids dream...

Hello, new to power boats, old sail boat guy

Welcome aboard, I made the switch about 25 years ago and never looked back. I did however stick with full displacement power boats instead of planning or semi displacement hulls. Our present boat is very comfortable.

    Boating with Stu and Pid.

My plans are to go whether the boat is done or not. The boat not being perfect, has not stopped the last 5,000 miles. Last summer I installed a complete autopilot system during the trip. I will concentrate on the things that are much more difficult to do while traveling.

    Reality of high moisture readings

There is a product called Inject-A-Deck that works very well to repair decks without cutting them apart. I have done it both ways and much prefer the Inject-A- Deck method.

    Side Shift ST350 Stern Thruster?

Oh, if only that were true! I hear what you are saying but this has nothing to do with reality and everything to do with perception. I single hand my boat just fine by myself without my wife on board. The problem is that my wife has very little proprioception and cannot pass a sobriety check...

    Side Shift ST350 Stern Thruster?

I do not have a bow thruster. I can put the bow where I want it and can walk the stern at half throttle on both engines. I do not think I need a stern thruster, My wife does.

    Side Shift ST350 Stern Thruster?

Has anyone used one of these stern thrusters. These are open non-tunnel enclosed units that are basically bolted onto the back of the boat. Having a full displacement trawler I do not have much transom below the waterline to install a tunnel drive stern thruster. In fact there is no room...

    Boating with Stu and Pid.

You make a point. I am more or less thinking that after April 2 and before mid June I will be useless. That may not be the case and there is plenty of stuff I can do at home in the shop and install on the boat in short order before leaving. There is a lot of dead space in the boat that can...

    Boating with Stu and Pid.

My boat will not be done when I leave July 15th for a complete loop. Probably 6,500 miles. The biggest expense will be dockage by far. My wife is partially disabled, cannot use a dinghy and needs to get regular movement exercise to keep from becoming immobile. Marinas probably 5 days a week. I...

    Boating with Stu and Pid.

You would think after 60 years of boating that I would leave those two characters ashore but that does not seem to be the case. Stu and Pid love my company. I purchased my boat cheap two years ago. I bought the right boat, at the right price and had the money, talent and time to make the boat...

    Island Pilot 435 great loop

I looked at a new Island Pilot in the Great Lakes several years ago. It had impressive cruise and fuel burn numbers but I was not impressed with the build quality at the time. I would want a good survey, especially stringers, deck and tankage. .

Tis the Season for Mapping out your Summer on the Water

I don't read "Itinerary/time line" into the original posters first post. I certainly map out where I would like to go for the following summer so I can prepare. That does not mean that once I push off the dock I have a time line. It means I have a plan. Next years plan is recover from...

Could have been International Harvester 549's or 638 CID six cylinder engines.

    Boat Selection and Draft

I wanted a full displacement boat with about 4' max draft and 15' max air draft that had tons of room.

    Complexity vs mission-worthiness and reliability

I see very little advantage to a mechanical diesel if the owner cannot work on diesels to begin with. The majority of boat buyers are limited in knowledge of propulsion systems. In addition, most boat buyers are over concerned with the amount of fuel burn figuring that is the big costs. An...

    Intro/Hello

If I was going to stay on the river systems I would totally buy a house boat. Right tool for the job. Probably a Pluckebaum

    Intro/Hello

Oh, that's right, I remember that Marinette did build houseboat too. Just don't see them in the Great Lakes.
  23. PierreR

    Intro/Hello

Marinette is not really what I would label as a houseboat. There is a ton of them on Lake Erie and Lake Erie is not exactly house boat friendly. They are a modified V design. My biggest complaint against them is chine slap at anchor.

    Intro/Hello

We have a lot of Marinette's here around Sandusky Oh. I believe there is currently a 40' for sale at Battery Park.

    Sapele

I have had pretty good luck with Sapele. Color can vary a lot and looking for the right shade and grain can make a large difference in look. Yes it can look very much like teak. It does not have the durability of teak for exterior application.
