    Solar arch frame installed

I should add, I've measured the daily cost of running the water heater and it's about 2.7kWh. If it's cloudy, or in the dead of winter, you can turn it off and save 33% of your daily loads. A daily shower (turn on the water heater before bed) costs about 1.2-1.4kWh (takes about 50 minutes to...

    Solar arch frame installed

I've got 1800W on my cabin roof. Just a few days ago it generated 11.1kWh. I've seen close to 12kWh generated in a day. I've got 2x5kWh 48V LiFePO4 batteries. I removed my Onan generator as well and don't miss it one bit. My daily loads, with the water heater on, are about 6-7kWh. On rainy days...

    Remove flybridge, add solar

If the stabilizers you're talking about are the Waveless ones, they should draw significantly less power than that. The manufacturer states that the STAB25 draws, on average, 200W while underway (500W at anchor). You'll have to keep us up to speed with the installation!

Got the boat launched. Took her to Anacapa Island yesterday. Link to photos and videos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2TwLswkC1ZyegpUD6 Fuel tanks are filled to only 50% capacity, but overall the boat motion without the flybridge appears to be noticeably snappier, but not by much. Roll period used...

Got the panels in last week. Now on to wiring, etc. I have settled on a 48V bank.

    To Hawaii

Too funny. I'm returning from a 7mo deployment on the Nimitz. We are off the coast of CA now. Air Wing fly off today. Flying one of our F18s off to Lemoore, CA and will be home tonight. We left Hawaii on the 23rd. Have averaged about 30 knots SOG, at least. Have been following your posts and...

It's an older model Onan 8kW MDKD I believe. Only 2500 hours or so.

Makes sense. I'll have to rely on the movement of air on top of the panels and convection. I think it will be fine.

Do you have a picture of your solar array? That's a ton of solar. Do you also have a generator?

Thanks for the comments. Interesting idea about the mounting rails!

    Remove flybridge, add solar

I have been looking at pros and cons of all of the voltages. 12, 24, and 48. But still researching on how the everything would piece together. Some of my big draws like engine starters and the winch are 12V DC. The simplest option would be to stay with 12V. But I like the idea of a 24V house...

Not sure what you're asking. What about air flow?

I'll be using a single Victron 250V/100A MPPT controller for the whole array. I thought about wiring each panel separately on their own smaller controller, but ended up going with a single controller given the minimal, if any, shading I expect on the array. From my research, panels in series and...

Some additional pictures. Gen will be removed and sold when I return. Total solar array is 1800W (4x450W). Will be wired in series so electrically one panel at about 180V in full sunlight. Ultimately will charge a battery bank of about 10kWh or so. Stove will be electric so no more propane...

Roof project mostly completed. Need to install the four panels. Attached a bunch of pictures showing varying states of project completion. I'm on deployment still so the bulk of the work has been completed by a yard in Ventura while I have been at sea. Excited to return soon and finish the solar...

First of all, I've always been a fan of your boat. Beautiful. About the boat move - yes, I originally thought there was no way I would be able to take the boat with me until I dug into the JTR a bit more. The JTR stipulates that if your permanent residence is a "mobile home" (defined in the...

Just another shot this evening. And I should add - boat will be shipped via truck from MD to CA in the next couple months, now that it is within height limits, courtesy of Uncle Sam. The Joint Travel Regulations allow reimbursement for the movement of mobile homes (which includes boats). In...

Removed flybridge. Bench being donated to marina and coming off tomorrow. Last two pics are of the sort of look I'm going for. Lots of work ahead filling holes and epoxy/fg everything smooth. Going on a deployment soon so work may slow down for a while. Tempted to give the rest of the project of...

Appreciate all of the opinions. Seriously. The flybridge is about to come off, though. Hydraulics, coax, electrical, vents, etc. are disconnected. Working on arrangements for a crane to lift off the flybridge, hopefully in the next month or so. Then I'll need to do a bit of work cleaning up...

Some more ideas. The stabilization design will depend on further structural analysis and more thought about low bridge clearance necessity.

Work has been busy, but that doesn't mean my imagination has not. I decided to try to illustrate the concept I have for my boat. Remove FB, add stabilizers, and have an outdoor lounge/social area, all while being able to scoot underneath the lowest bridges. At the moment, my boat projects...
