Is there price fixing in marine electronics?

I spent a lot of years in sales with a company in a different market. MAP (minimum advertised price) was a thing in our market as well and that was 25 years ago.

    Flooring Question.

I know some people that put bamboo flooring in their boats. Real wood, very durable and looks good. Worth looking into.

Never used them but they do have an excellent reputation.

Running an A/C unit on an inverter

Agree, you should give one a try before buying, but you must have an older, inefficient AC unit if a Honda 2000 couldn’t run it. I’ve got a buddy who runs his 16000 BTU unit on a Honda 2000. I was floored when he told me he did this, so I asked if I could try his 2000 on my 16k BTU unit. Ran...

    Moorage cost search

Moorage is just another type of real estate and as they say in real estate, the 3 most important criteria is location, location, location. Do you want to live in the high rent areas or in the hood, or some place in between?

    New member and owner

Regarding maintenance, has the bottom ever been refastened? I would hope at least once and maybe ready for a second go round.

    Painting a wood hull

You might want to check when was the last time the bottom was refastened? If it needs to be done, prepare to spend major $$ to have it done

    Crestliner restoration

I just did a quick google…there is a website devoted to classic aluminum boats from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Probably a better place to look for info than a trawler forum.

    Deal before survey?

As others have said, yes, this is typical. In fact, when dealing with a broker, most won’t even start the engine without a signed agreement.

Only use this website. www.uscg.mil/nvdc. Others may look like the CG, but they are not.

I’m getting the reminder letter from the real CG doc center today. I got the scam reminder a month ago, hoping I would use them…I didn’t

    Scam Letter

I fell for it about 8 years ago. Never again and I have made it my mission in life to alert as many people as possible to not fall for this (legal) scam.

    Reg numbers

Be careful about fonts. Most states clearly say reg numbers have to be block style. Fancy fonts could easily get you stopped by a LEO.

    Reg numbers

In VA, the numbers have to be on the forward half of the boat. Registration sticker on the same line following the numbers. I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing most states are the same. Being in VA, registration for documented boats is optional, so no registration sticker for me.

    racor 500 series lid

Even though you can’t buy directly from Racor (you have to buy from one of their distributors), I called Racor a couple years ago, a real live receptionist actually answered the phone, switched me to customer service where one of their guys answered after 2-3 rings. Quickly gave me the...

My batteries went flat over the winter! Why?

CO2 sensors are a problem on my boat killing batteries. I have special breakers to turn them off which I do.

    Alternative to varnish

Another vote for Cetol. If I recall, I did 3 coats of the natural finish and 3 coats of the gloss coat. Very happy with the results and WAY easier to do than varnish.

    Name Change vs Renewal

Exactly what service did they provide for $70. Most service companies charge $75 for a simple renewal (you can do it yourself for $26) and generally for initial documentation, they charge at least $300 more, usually $4-500 more. Whatever fees the CG Doc office charges, expect to pay 3-4 times...
