Mainship 400 V-berth vinyl replacement, paint hull sides?

Big project Doug, I don’t envy you. My vinyl seems to be in pretty good shape so I hope I don’t ever need to do this. One thought I had was to use thin strips of wood or maybe even some sort of composite material that can easily flex and mold to the curve of the hull. Constructing adhesive...

    Mainship Hydraulic steering

Don’t remove the lower plug or you’ll drain the whole system from the flybridge down.

    Mainship Hydraulic steering

My MS400 had the same sloppy steering, it happened gradually over a few years and wasn't very noticeable until last summer. I took a 1 quart plastic oil bottle and cut in half. Then you screw the oil filler tube to both the fill hole and the bottom of the bottle. Ideally you have another set of...

Mainship 400 Below Deck A/C Vent Removal

I have also tried to remove the vent cover in the guest stateroom and failed. I assume it was glued because I couldn't get it to budge. I abandoned the project as I didn't want to damage anything. Let us know if you figure it out!

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

The noise never came back. We went on a 561 mile 54 hour voyage and ran it the whole time and it ran flawlessly. Changed both fuel filters just to be safe.

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

That's good advice for a winter project. I would like to purchase one injector to have as a spare and online prices seem to range from $400 to over $600! Does that seem reasonable? Does anyone have a connection where I might be able to find a rebuilt injector?

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

Interesting. It did sound like something internal knocking, but I turned it off so quickly that I didn't really have a chance to open the lazarette and get a better look (listen?) at it. It ran just fine with no noise a few days later. Question: Is it possible that the needle freed itself...

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

I will take a good look at it next time at the boat. I hope that’s the problem.

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

A Forum Friend, I think his name was Dave or Doug, yeah Doug, once said to remove the sound shield and throw it away. I followed Dave's - I mean Doug's - advice so no sound shield. It did occur to me that something was rattling. I figure the engine wouldn't run normally if there was something...

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

Went back yesterday with a stethoscope and, of course, it doesn't make the noise anymore. Ran for about 45 minutes under load. Now I am baffled.

    Kohler Generator making unusual noise

Generator is a Kohler 8kw diesel generator, 2004 vintage. Saturday, after running for about 3-4 hours it started making a clanking/rattling noise. I shut it down in less than 15 seconds after the noise started. On Sunday, I started the genny and there was no noise and it ran normally. I did...

Mainship 400 Galley Table Conversion to Single Berth

My 2004 MS400 came with some filler boards and a cushion that fills in the space. They were found under the berths in the storage area. I am guessing you don't have them but pretty easy to fabricate.

    Mainship 400 new window covers

I made them myself with Pfifertex from Sailrite using the old ones as patterns. I don’t really know how to sew but I borrowed a standard sewing machine and it was a good winter project. Pretty easy.

MS 400 Flybridge Folding Table Part

That is probably something fabricated in the Mainship shop from a piece of delrin or other material that would not necessarily be available to buy as a stand alone part. Best bet is to make one using the old one as a pattern.

Can you re-puropse the speed wheel through-hull for a washdown?

That's probably where I'd put it. It would be nice to be able to tap into an existing thru-hull, like the A/C for example, but I'm worried about unintended consequences, like creating an air lock or starving the A/C unit.

Can you re-puropse the speed wheel through-hull for a washdown?

Steve, I am still a bit undecided. Not sure if it is worth a few hundred to get a washdown when I can stretch the hose from a fresh water washdown located near the transom. Maybe if I could find a cheap seacock at a boat flea market or something.

My batteries went flat over the winter! Why?

Well here is an update, for what it's worth. The marina put their charger on the batteries and they seem to have come up to 12.6V, for now at least. I will be monitoring closely to see if any permanent damage has occurred. I am going to be suspicious of them for a while until they can prove...

Can you re-puropse the speed wheel through-hull for a washdown?

No, it's a freshwater flush head.

My batteries went flat over the winter! Why?

That's good advice, Don. I have had boats in the same marina for 15 years and always followed the same practice of turning off the battery switches with no ill effects, but disconnecting the terminal is certainly a better way to go and I will follow that practice in the future. There must have...
