Pilot 30 Cruising Speed- How fast are you going ?

Well, your 6LP makes about 18 hp per gpm of diesel so it is producing about 8*18= 144 hp, much less than the Cummins at wot- 210. If they were both making the same hp, the fuel burn would be about the same. Remember, the Cummins makes its maximum hp at about 2,600 rpm, your 6LP makes it at...

Yanmar Reliability/Comments on 6LP 6LPA 6LP2A STE Motors and Kanzaki Transmissions

I am amazed that the cost of rebuilding a pair of Crusader gassers is the same as replacing with rebuilt Yanmar 6LPs. I would have guessed that the Yanmars would cost twice what the Crusaders cost, not considering the substantial extra installation cost of the Yanmars. But if your numbers are...

Pilot 30 Cruising Speed- How fast are you going ?

Well, that same Cummins block can be had with 380 or even 425 hp. The Yanmar 6LP at 315 hp is a perfect match for that boat. But enjoy your Cummins 210 hp engine. You could run it at wot and it probably wouldn’t hurt it at all. That is according to Tony Athens, the Cummins guru on Sbmar.com...

    Safely cruising into our 80s?

Some years ago I helped a TF member bring his sun deck trawler up the east coast. After a few experiences docking, I said not for me. I don’t think it would be good for you either, particularly at 80 yo. David

    New AGM batteries from Trojan

They sure are expensive. Amazon has a G31 for $500. That is 2-3 times more than a no name AGM. If I wanted the 100% depth of discharge capability on my MH’s batteries, it would be cheaper to install 100 Ah LiTime li batteries, upgrade the converter to be compatible and (if testing indicated it...

Switching between a lifelong aviation experience to boating

Welcome. There are a lot of similarities between flying and boating, but one big set of differences- the pilot of an airplane can’t pull over, tie up to what a cloud, then fix dinner, sleep overnight, get up the next morning and continue his journey. Much of the extra stuff on a cruising boat-...

    Cape Dory repower

In addition to the factory offerings, Chrysler gasser, 100 hp Westerbeke and 200 hp Volvo diesel, the CD has been successfully repowered with the Yanmar 4LH 220 diesel. That has proved to be the best diesel engine for that boat. Unfortunately it has been discontinued. If you can find a running...

Northern Lights 8kw Diesel Generator. (8800 hours)

If it starts quickly cold, then it probably doesn’t have anything major. Also take off the oil filler cap and put your hand over it a few inched from the cap base. You may feel some light pulses but anything heavy indicates wear. The two tests go hand and hand to detect significant ring wear...

    Mainship 34T Engines

I owned a 2006 34T and used it for about five years. It had the older 370 engine that was great. The 380 was a modification of the 370 which may have been based on common rail injection. I am sure it was a great engine as well. Among other things, make sure it will hit rated rpm and a bit- 3,350...

    Winterization - Antifreeze

Hmmm, three cases? How many gallons is that? It only takes two gallons to winterize my MH. Also I think you are confusing engine antifreeze with the RVs potable water system antifreeze. The -50 F stuff is what you should use in your RV.

    Yanmar 4LV pump problem

If water is getting in your fuel tank, the Raycor filter should catch it unless it is so much that it overflows the filter and gets into the engine. I think that the 4LV is a common rail injected and these are very sensitive to sea water. The generator is not common rail so it tolerates water...

Using solar mppt charge controller as a DC to DC charger

It should work, as long as it is an MPPT controller and its voltage rating exceedes the alternator output. David

Mainship Pilot 30 cabin Heat options after hours

If the Vevor really is vented and it conveniently doesn’t show it vented in any of the application pics, it might be a good low cost solution. David

Mainship Pilot 30 cabin Heat options after hours

I had a kerosine fueled radiant heater that I used to warm up our unheated sun porch on chilly mornings. It worked great, but…. If I were to forget and leave it on for a couple of hours, the room would get stuffy. Probably low O2 and some unburned hydrocarbons with a little carbon monoxide...

    Yanmar 6LY3-ETP knowledge?

I believe that engine is an upgraded model of the 6LY 3STP that Bachus refers to above. I have had two boats with that engine and it was a very solid engine. The 6LY STP and presumably the 6L3-ETP will give you thousands of hours of good service if you: * Prop it correctly so it reaches 3,350+...

Mainship Pilot 30 cabin Heat options after hours

I used a similar one to heat up the cabin in the morning. I plumbed it directly to the on board propane tank. But I would never use it overnight. Too risky as all of the combustion gasses stay in the cabin. David

Mainship Pilot 30 cabin Heat options after hours

Probably the safest although not the cheapest is a diesel fueled truck heat such as the Espar. The Chinese make a knock off that may or may not be as good for 1/3 the price. David

Camano Troll bow thruster/windlass power source

Not sure there is a standard new boat configuration. Often the dealer installs the batteries, so it could be anything. FWIW, a bow thruster is more like a starting load: heavy and brief. A windlass is in between. David

    Engine Zinc Durability

Some only go 6 mo, others 1-2 years. Depends on whether seawater drains down from the zinc when you shutdown. Once you learn which is which, you can adjust your replacement schedule accordingly. David

    Luke Anchor Big Enough?

A Luke anchor is an old style fisherman’s anchor. The Fortress anchor will foul itself in a reversing current anchorage. Go with a modern design anchor like the Rocna, Manson Supreme, Spade, etc. At a minimum, meet the manufacturer’s size recommendations for your boat, preferably more. David

Anyone swap a stock Delco 22Si alternator for a Delco 28Si alternator on a QSB 5.9?

A Balmar external regulator with temperature probe does cut output to keep case temps down. But the poster above doesn’t have an external regulator. I think he may need one. Years ago while full time cruising I had a Balmar aternator and regulator with the temp probe. After a couple of days at...

Anyone swap a stock Delco 22Si alternator for a Delco 28Si alternator on a QSB 5.9?

“At idle, soon as the voltage controlled relays closed the charging circuit to the alternator, the alternator was charging the bank at 150A plus handling 30A of load.” Check the alternator case temp the next time you do this. 180A from an alternator for any length of time can overheat it...
