    Starlink experience to consider

Our cruising grounds remain south of Campbell River, so the RV plan should work OK. Ordering the RV plan from Starlink.

    Rocna at Amazon

We ordered the Rocna Vulcan from Amazon last year, after shopping the Seattle area & some online vendors. Great price & free shipping. It also sits in our bow pulpit snugly. Great upgrade to our old CQR knock-off. I need to learn to check Amazon first!

WIFI Underway What are you using?

We have the T-Mobile plan for the US, Canada and Mexico. For our iPhones & iPads, it worked fairly well in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea in Canada. Not perfect, but mostly useable. Still planning on adding Starlink, once they come out with the smaller antenna this Fall, primarily for TV.

    AIS Pros & Cons?

Simple answer...don't wander into restricted areas that are identified on the ENC charts! I think AIS should be mandatory.

    Impeller replacement

In case is hasn’t been mentioned, on my Cummins 6BT engines, the Sherwood pumps are easily removed; just 2 hose clamps and a couple of bolts. Working on a bench (or galley table) makes the job easy.

    few autopilot questions

I installed a Garmin Reactor 40 last summer...works very well and is tied into the Garmin GPS plotter. The pump is close to the lower helm...just barely audible in the main salon. If you install a Shadow Drive, make sure it's prior to the pump. The hydraulics guys installed ours between the pump...

    Who has/uses AIS?

Late to the party, but, to me, AIS is indispensable in my cruising waters here in the Salish Sea. I have both Rx/Tx and on several occasions have had useful communications with the "big boys", ferries, and Seattle & Victoria Traffic. It's also useful for seeing the traffic lanes around corners...

    Anodes wearing out FAST

The suggestion to use a silver chloride reference electrode is a good one...use someone that knows how to interpret the data. Isolation transformers are a good solution, but are very expensive, heavy and large...it takes quite a bit of room. A galvanic isolator will frequently solve the...

    HAM HF Radio on Boats

I guess it depends on where you operate. Here, on the West Coast, Ham HF SSB is very popular with the blue water sailors all over the Pacific...the nets on 14.300 operate daily and provide terrific service. I'm not a blue water sailor, so my boating is restricted to the mostly protected waters...

    HAM HF Radio on Boats

Cruising in the Salish Sea, I've found Ham Radio to be quite useful. I've had 2M VHF on the boat for several years and it's hard to find anywhere not in range of several repeaters. There is a system of interconnected repeaters the entire length of Vancouver Island. There are both US and Canadian...

Name change - Vinyl lettering adhesive removal

I used "Goof Off" cleaner to remove the adhesive remnants from stencils that had been on the stern for several years...worked like a charm, with little rubbing required. You can get it at Home Depot. I also used a heat gun to aid in peeling the old stencils off, then the Goof Off for the...

    Tablet Navigation

Which App are you using? What are the improvements compared to iNavX? I'm presently using the Navionics 2XG charts in iNavX...is the charts update cost similar in the Navionics App (usually around $49 with Fugawi)? Thanks

    Tablet Navigation

I started out using my iPad as a back-up to my Garmin GPSMAP-942xs, but for a couple of years now, I've been using my iPad Pro 12", running iNavX with Navionics charts. I like the larger presentation and the Navionics charts have more readability & detail here in the Salish Sea waters, IMHO. I...

    Anyone used Seattle Mattress company?

Good company...just make sure you’re clear about what you want, and that they understand your needs. Quality construction.

AIS do you turn it off

When I installed my AIS xponder, I put it on a separate breaker in the panel and turned it off. However, after observing the 24/7 operation of several other stationary boats in and near my marina, plus we’ll over a hundred moored boats/ships in the ship canal, I just leave it on....it just...

    Garmin 740s Network Connectivity

Last update... After numerous email exchanges and diagnosing with Garmin support, I updated the 740s software to Ver. 4.3 and the 942xs to Ver. 8.7. Updating the 740s from 4.1 to 4.3 didn't do it -- the 942xs came from the factory with Ver. 8.6 -- the update to Ver 8.7 did the trick. The 740s...

    Garmin 740s Network Connectivity

I sent a reply back to Garmin...the menu item Jeffery mentioned does not appear on the 740xs configuration pages. I've also looked at all the menu items on the 942xs...nothing about sharing depth info on the network. So, I might have to add a network transducer, as previously noted, although I...

    Garmin 740s Network Connectivity

Here's the response I received from Garmin. Looks like a no-go. Oh, well...maybe I can find a network transducer that also includes the speed feature, for the N2K bus. I'd be happy to help. In the GPSMAP 740s go to Configure>Communications>Preferred Sources. Select the type of data then...

    Garmin 740s Network Connectivity

Resurrecting this thread... I recently installed antennas & cables for my Kenwood 2 Meter radio and a new Digital Yacht AIS, and yesterday I installed the NMEA 2000 network. The AIS is active on both the 942 & 740 chart plotters, and both Garmins can see each other on the network. The digital...

    Ham Radio, APRS, etc... LONG

Yeah, that's probably a bit of a stretch from your QTH,, unless you have a 50W station with a directional antenna. If you'd like to listen, or even check-in, Charlie, KC1S has an Echolink node at his QTH he activates for the Net...several members check-in via the link from Friday Harbor, Gig...

Congratulations, Dave. Welcome to the fraternity! Your era of confusion is just beginning...the more you learn, the more you'll realize is out there yet to learn. Now, get after that General... Yeah, Desolation Sound remains an unknown, at this time. Hopefully, I'll be able to verify the coverage this summer, and is one reason why I'll keep my Delorme InReach subscription until I've cruised the area. Points south of Desolation appear to have great coverage. It might be a good...

Sounds like a good plan, Dave. Baby steps...once you get licensed, the options and capabilities that open-up can make your head swim! The Tech license is a great start, and I encourage to to upgrade to General sooner, rather than later, for the HF opportunities it will open up. I have no...
