Whale Grey IC experiences and advice

Unless I misunderstand the plumbing, why can’t you just leave the T in the line so all 3 drain into the manifold? My sink drains to a thru hull, so I only plumbed the shower and AC condensate to the manifold, but I don’t see why you couldn’t just connect what you have now, as long as all the...

    Fire Extinguishers Expiration Date

I found that my 2.5 lb refillable extinguishers might as well have been disposable - a couple of hours trolling the interweb, a dozen phone calls, and two visits produced exactly nobody who was interested in refilling them. The local fire dept couldn’t tell me anything. I tossed them and...

CAT 3208 failure - how to prevent next time

I have a pair of 3208T’s, no aftercooler, 302hp. They’re kind of a bastard engine for my 40,000 lb tub, but they start when I look at the ignition, and run like a watch at 1250.

    Port Cat 3208 won't start

Are you bleeding the top injector by running the priming pump? If so, did you get all the ball valves back in run position? I’ve shut an engine down by inadvertently kicking one of the ball valves closed a little. Did you look in the Racor to be sure it’s full?

Are two (marine) heads better than one?

Gotta be two heads. And I would also vote for one salt and one fresh, particularly if you happen to already have a seacock available. If you’re trying to stay out someplace a couple of extra days, it’s nice to not have to worry about how many times you can flush the head; also, you can still...

    Dropping vs Lowering Anchor

Galley Maid windlass, 55# Delta, 150’ 5/16 chain, 100’ 5/8 triple braid. We stop on our spot, the Admiral backs off the windlass nut and lets the anchor free fall - sometimes it needs a nudge with the wrench. We typically anchor in 5-12 ft of water, so it’s not much of an event, but she knows...

    Hurley H30 davits

I’ve had the H20 for 3 yrs, no rust at all. I did have to swage down a couple of rivet heads that protruded into a channel the square tube slides in. I agree with the comment on swim step width. Mine is pretty narrow, so it’s just about impossible to pull the rib up beamwise as intended. I...

    Ocean Alexander For Sale

Best of luck. That’s a beautiful boat, somebody will be lucky to get her.

    VHF cable connector

That’s an unfortunate result, one that I kind of half expected. Living in lightning central, I disconnect all my instrument cables when they’re not in use, so they’ve seen lots of handling, and so far, so good. At the first sign of trouble, I’ll snip them off, buy a new high power solder gun...

    VHF cable connector

I just installed two new antennas using the Shakespeare solderless connectors. Easy to install and I get great signal on both VHF and AIS. If you’re an experienced solderer with a good, high power solder gun, the soldered connectors are probably theoretically better. If you’re a regular guy with...

    Noflex versus OxyClean...Paging Peggie Hall

MSDS says 80%, unless I’m misreading it. Most sodium percarbonate comes from Solvay already coated.

    Noflex versus OxyClean...Paging Peggie Hall

I use Noflex regularly, heaping teaspoon in each head every day, and once a week to clean the bowls. I bought 6 bottles awhile ago to get a discount price and avoid shipping charges. It works great, no odors and easy pumpouts. That being said, Noflex is just sodium percarbonate and baking soda...

    Cutlass bearing or something else?

Took the boat out today with a buddy. Ran up and down the harbor, fast, slow and in between, straight and in circles, forward and reverse. We alternated between the helm and observing in the engine room. And saw very little. The port stuffing box clearly vibrates, but it’s not extreme. The...

    Cutlass bearing or something else?

Thanks guys. I had the wife put the boat in gear at the dock while I listened/watched in the engine room. A little clunkier going into gear than I expected, but I’ve never listened to shifting in the engine room before. There was no shaft noise, and I couldn’t see any movement in the shaft...
