40' Bluewater pilothouse trawler yacht, Acapulco style.

Must have been fun ordering and owning a brand new Bluewater. I'm envious. Pictures of your Bluewater would be welcome. Did you keep any of the Bluewater brochures, drawings etc? What did you replace the Bluewater with?

History of the Bluewater 40 Pilothouse Trawler

Welcome to Trawler Forum. What a great story. The people you mentioned are part of Bluewater history. So are you. I'd be interested in hearing more about ordering and receiving the Bluewater. About Bluewater dealers. Also Bluewater cruising stories would be appreciated.

    Bluewater #1

OK, I know which Tayan you own. Tried to get Bill to Join POYC a while ago. Getting together sounds fun but I have a big project that I start after Labor Day, replacing the rest of the styrofoam flotation under my boathouse. I also just returned from a two month cruise. We can maybe get...

    Bluewater #1

The name Bill Stults sounds familiar. I met a lot of Tayana and Bluewater owners after I bought Sandpiper in 2000. The Tayana, C&C and Bluewater owners were a tighter group then and we explored each others boats and exchanged information even though there were no organized rendezvous. I moor...

Nice Tayana MNMAYON! Where in Tacoma do you moor the boat? Where did it come from and previous boat name. I was in contact with many Tayana and C&C owners many years back.

There is also one at Port Orchard Yacht Club. I don't know if he follows TF.

    Tayana 42 raised pilot house

The Tayana 42 is very similar to the Bluewater 40 raised pilothouse trawlers. They are built alike, fiberglass hull with a fiberglass covered plywood above the deck. They both have heavily built FG hulls but their uppers share the same wet plywood and delamination issues. Repairs on both...

Interesting boat. Full walk-around decks is a feature that would be handy to have. .

    Should fuel tanks be full?

Using light bulbs to warm engine rooms is not the safest or economical choice. Use your Golden Rod instead. If you use a light bulb, mount it inside a coffee can to protect against breakage and burns. A thermostatically controlled engine room heater set at 40 to 50 degrees uses less...

    Should fuel tanks be full?

Yes, my tanks are original. Bluewaters came equipped with a variety of tank sizes and location. The boats were semi-custom and buyers were able to configure them to suit their needs. For example, Sandpiper was ordered with the stairs from the pilothouse to the stateroom deleted. The second...

    Should fuel tanks be full?

Sandpiper has 2 X 300 gallon steel fuel tanks in the engine room. It is moored in the PNW. I've not filled the tanks full in 20+ years, usually put in around 400 gallons every spring. I leave minimal fuel in the tanks (15 to100 gallons) through fall, winter and spring and maintain a 50 degree...

Sandpiper will attend depending on date and location.

    Fuel tank leaks and baffles

I've had the inspection plate off Sandpipers 250 gallon fuel tanks. There are 3 baffles athwartship with large access holes in each tank.

    Clear thermal window coverings

I used a thicker vinyl and used a snap tool to install snaps. I don't think it was 30 gauge. That's awfully heavy. The first set was made of thin vinyl and the snaps pulled out sometimes. They looked like crap but lasted 17 years!
