To Run or Not to Run the Generator

I don't mind running the genny when we need it, but I prefer to keep it at a minimum. We have a 3K inverter with 12 golf cart battery house bank. This will run everything on the boat for a couple of days, except AC and water heater. I would run gen a couple of hours in the morning and again...

    Solder or Crimp

I used a hydraulic crimper I got from Harbor Freight to do all the cables on the boat. Can't beat the price at $53, and that includes several of the most common die sizes. Comes in a nice case, too. Hydraulic Wire Crimping Tool

    DriveSaver for 6.354 Perkins

We have them installed on our boat. I can attest that they work as advertised. We hit a huge submerged log on the Pearl River a few years ago. The elastic element sheared as it was designed to do, saving our transmission. I carry a spare, so we were back underway in less than an hour. Best...

    What's your cruising speed.

Running our twin Lehman 120's at 1600 rpm gives us about 7.2 kts and a fuel burn rate of about 3.6 gph. If we push them up to 1750 or so we can get 8 kts, but fuel burn goes up to around 5 gph. Burning almost 30% more fuel to gain .8 kts is just not worth it, in our opinion. So we putt-putt...

    Your speed at idle

About 5 knots, I wish it were less. I usually come into the marina with only one engine in gear to keep it down to 2-3 knots.*

When the draft of your craft exceeds the depth of the water you are aground

They never got her off the beach. She was cut up for scrap. You can see the process in a series of pictures at this site.*Scroll to the bottom of the page. * http://goo.gl/0SnZm -- Edited by ktischler on Monday 26th of September 2011 10:34:45 AM

    Fuel Capacity

800 gallons in 4 tanks, but I usually only fill to about 600 gallons. Unless I find a really good deal on fuel! Fuel burn 3.6GPH at 1600 RPM, which usually gives me 7.2-7.5 knots. 1800 RPM will give me 8.5 knots, but burn rate goes up to 5GPH. I keep it slow, I am no hurry to get to the next...

    Direct TV

That's not going to do you a bit of good on a boat at anchor!

    Direct TV

You can get an in-motion KVH satellite system for about $1K. It is the RV version, but works fine on the boat. This is the one we installed six years ago and it works perfectly at anchor and underway. http://goo.gl/Q0A8E One note, though. This dish can only see two satellites, so will not do...

    Rafting up ??

Nope, no rafting for us. I want to have my own anchor down and set so I am comfortable with staying in place. And I want to be able to leave in a hurry, should I need to. Any boat passing nearby throwing a large wake can wreak havoc on a raft-up. I have seen some real cluster-messes with...

    Memorial Day weekend boating

We just splashed Microship last weekend, after two months on the hard getting a complete topsides Awlgrip job, and bottom paint, including barrier coating. So we are anxious to get some boat time in. We will be heading out to the barrier islands off Mississippi and cruising for the next 4-5...

    Surveyor in South Florida

Malcolm Elliott is one of the best there is, in our opinion. You will not get any broker that will recommend him, as he is a straight shooter and will tell it like it is. He saved us from purchasing a boat that would have been a nightmare of ongoing problems. At the surface, she looked great...

Yes, I use the free version on my Android phone and it works quite well.
