    Lopez Island Grounding

That’s really interesting that they wound up in La Conner. Thanks for the report, ScottRhodes!

    Lopez Island Grounding

Happy news re: Arcturos: We encountered her at about 1045 today making good headway traveling SSW shortly after rounding Humphrey Head (on Lopez Island). She had a TowboatUS escort, but she was traveling under her own power, apparently heading to Anacortes. I was surprised and delighted to see...

    Lopez Island Grounding

That rock on your chart screenshot is indeed notorious and is inside the blue area of the channel. Not sure if that’s the one he hit, but seems likely. Oddly the tide at the time was nearing the day’s high. Learned later that the hull is aluminum, fwiw.

    Lopez Island Grounding

First Mate and I were tied up at a slip at Island Marine Center in Fisherman Bay, Lopez Island (in the San Juans) last evening. Watching a show in the berth when a Coast Guard helicopter started hovering at low altitude near the dock. From the flybridge I could see that it was directly above a...

    Lazarette Hinges

Your comment is uninformed on multiple levels. The "Grand Banks office" of today does not stock or sell parts for the thousands of "legacy" GB yachts that continue to command top resale values on today's market. The breed of legacy GBs is a long way from dying, and the newer models that can now...

    Those with an FL120

Another data point: We have a GB 32 w/ single FL120. 17,000lb displacement. Gear ratio 2.1:1. A PO replaced the original 3-blade, 24" dia., 18" pitch prop with a 4-blade 22" x 16". Don't know why they made the change, but the newer rig seems to work fine. WOT is 2300rpm.

Simpler way to describe locations at sea?

Great question. In search of an answer, I opened the app on my phone and typed in beer.over.here. No results. I tried some variations on the beer-seeking theme. Still no results. So I got pretty random and tried glass.waiting.drink. Voila! A red pin appeared in the middle of the Southern Ocean...

Simpler way to describe locations at sea?

Accepted. You (and others) could very well be right that this system won't find enough traction to gain widespread use -- especially on the featureless ocean, where navigation by lat/long is the long-established norm. The company seems to recognize this, as I didn't find any explicit mention...

Simpler way to describe locations at sea?

I did quote the company's website and perhaps didn't make that clear enough. The bit I quoted just seemed like a reasonable and concise explanation for why they're doing what they're doing, and I guess I was too lazy to paraphrase. Everything I know about this outfit is based on spending about...

Simpler way to describe locations at sea?

I have absolutely no involvement with the company whatsoever. I learned about it a few days ago, more or less randomly. I posted here about it thinking that it might stimulate open-minded discussion on a topic of general interest. Won't be making that mistake again any time soon. Sorry to stir...

Simpler way to describe locations at sea?

Okay, BandB, you've told me where you are plus or minus 60 NM latitude and 43 NM longitude. That's a nice 2,500 square-mile grid. Want me to rescue you in my helicopter? How much time do you have? Sure, you can add more precision with degrees and seconds. But that's not really the point...

Correction. The entire 3words system is 5MB, which is negligible by today's memory-storage standards. And it works offline, i.e., you don't need to have a data connection to use it. As for "someone has WAAAYYY too much time on their hands" (Mr. RT) and "it's a solution in search of a problem"...

You don't have to install data for all 57 trillion data points. You just need to install their algorithm, which takes less than 10MB.
