Which Starlink kit for the boat

I just purchased the gen3 standard dish (non articulated) at Best Buy for $599. I am signing up for the Roam unlimited package for $150 a month. I understand it works well under about 10 mph. I spend the vast majority of my time within 10 miles of shore, so am not concerned about coverage. If I...

    Florida Condo?

The Stuart/ St Lucy areas are very nice and are boater friendly. I have a Condo in Cocoa Beach. 40 minutes from Orlando Airport, beautiful beaches, 20 minutes to Kennedy Space Center, an hour to Disney. Nice marinas in Port Canaveral, Cocoa and Titusville. Keep in mind the insurance issues in...

What are your boating goals of 2024 ?

We are planning the Erie Canal up to Oswego (maybe a side trip to the finger lakes) then to Thousand Islands, Kingston Ontario, Rideau Canal to Ottowa, Ottowa River to Montreal, down the St Lawrence to the Richilieu River and Chambly Canal, through Lake Champlain and back to the Hudson River...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

I just read an article that Starlink told everyone to dispose of their Gen 3 pole adapter because of a design flaw. They will send out a redesigned version to everyone who had one.

    Sail to power transition

Sailboat, motorboat, motor home, rest home. It's the natural progression. That being said, I moved from a 39 ft Pearson sailboat to a 40 ft Transpacific trawler in 2019 and couldn't be happier. Went from an average cruising speed of 5 or 6 kts to 7 or 8 kts. It doesn't sound like much, but it is...

    Utility budget for coffee?

As I'm the only one aboard who drinks coffee, I've found that a single cup Keurig machine works well. It uses 60 AMPS for about 2-3 minutes to make one cup. It automatically shuts off after the brew is done and does not retain a reservoir of water like the full size Keurig at home. I know there...

    Liquid for deck repair

Inject a deck There is a product called Inject a Deck. It is made specifically for wet/soft spots. It is an expandable, 2 part product that is pretty cool.

    Fiberglass hull Damage

Fiberglass work I had a Safe Harbor Yard put an 18" gash through my hull, just below the rubrail while hauling the boat a couple years ago. They brought it inside and patched, reinforced and gelcoated about a 2x3 ft section of my hull. Two years later and I can't tell exactly where the damage...

Dinghy naming, is it a thing?

My first dingy My first ever power boat was an old Thomson lapstrake with a very loud Johnson 60 hp I used for fishing. Coming from a sailing background, I named the boat "Hard of Herring". Of course the dingy had to be "Herring Aid". Other than that I have never named a dingy

    Block Island

Block Island can be fun although it's not for everyone. We have spent weeks anchored and/or moored in Great Salt Pond over the last several years. If you draw less than 5 1/2 ft, definitely anchor to the east of the mooring field in about 6 ft of water. It's very flat and good holding. Get there...

2023 cruising, So Where are You Going?

We did Lake Champlain last year (2022). What a great trip starting in Narragansett Bay, RI! Next year we plan to leave Albany area mid June and head west on the Erie Canal, up through Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands, Montreal and back down to Lake Champlain. Maybe we will catch you at some point...

First post, Ed on the Hudson River

Kingston is a fun stop. The Poughkeepsie Yacht Club was also fun, within biking distance to Hyde Park Vanderbilt Mansion and FDR Library and Homestead. I'm wintering at Coeymans Landing Marina prior to my spring trip up the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario. Beware the uppermost reaches of the Hudson...

    Hudson River Stops

I had a great night at Liberty Park ( behind the Statue) even though it was somewhat windy the water calmed right down. The most protected cove on the Hudson is Haverstraw Bay. Stay to the South side of the entrance and you should be fine. The bay deepens as you get further in. Very good 360°...
