I followed Peggy’s advice in her book and had a larger straight vent tube to a trough hull so that air can free go in and out. Best thing I have done. It worked great. I had to fight with the yard since they were convince I was crazy :)
I like to watch YouTube cruising and some of some of my favorites have switched to brand new, huge, complicated Catamarans. Shows I really like had older boats cruising in cool places, but have now become folks dealing with tons of warranty claims and months of trouble shooting on brand new...
Thanks for the update. It sounds like the forward transducer did its job for you.
Side question. How did you find The Dismal Swamp for the depths and logs with the transducer? That place seems like it would be helpful given the speed.
I am interested in how the standard horizon noise cancelling speaker/mic setup works. Do you have the model number. I have been using a cobra handheld headphone and mic which was the only reasonable vhf with a headphone jack.
Thanks everyone for the comments.
That is a good question why VHF has not changed. FURUNO just announced they have AI driven trips six months after we all got ChatGPT, but the vhf I use today is the same as the one I used in 1990 except it has gps coordinates in case of emergency.
Great discussion and some food for thought.
Thanks. I will give the Bluetooth and the echo link a try. Good point the vhf hasn’t changed for a lifetime. I struggled to find a handheld vhf that has an audio jack which I am playing with headphones.
Thanks Folks. Those were good reads. It would be nice to come into a marina and see a transcript of the harbor master on your screen which states “after you pass bouy 5, you are in Slip A4 which is and port side tie.”
I need to figure out how to hardwire my iPad to the audio from the vhf.
Thanks everyone. That gives me a ton of ideas I need to hunt down. I was thinking a touch screen monitor that runs off the usb port but they appear to top out at 16 inches. Going standard monitor gets me into the bigger screen ones and I am trackball based at home so that would be great.
You are right on those two items. My iPad always struggled on our prior boat with getting too hot on our flybridge. My crew has gotten used to 72 degree boat with our controlled environment.
I am finding it tougher to hear the vhf radio and I was wondering if anyone has found way to see the vhf words. I have been trying some speech to text apps on my iPad but I have not found a good way to make this happen. It seems like there should be some tools given how loud the boating...
That is what I was thinking. Pair it with a nice touch screen monitor and it feels like a great option. I can then monitor predict wind and other apps and sites.
I am running through options for new navigation suite on my 2009 Back Cove 37. I really like running my iPad with Aquamaps with Wi-Fi to NMEA 2000 data and I am contemplating going PC for the second option instead of a FURUNO MFD. Digital Yachts has their aquapc which draws 20 watts. They are...
