My helm gets covered similarly, even though it's under the bimini, etc. If nothing else, it keeps the dust off the helm.

My boat normally resides well covered, but I had that helm console cover made when the boat was stuck in an open wet slip for a year and a half after Hurricane Michael awaiting reconstruction of lift and cover. I now keep it on there as a matter of course.
