I must be doing something really dumb.

Here are my Racors. 2040SM. The new number is 2040N.

However these filters are about an inch longer than the ones currently in the housing. Same diameter but longer.

What am I missing? I wish I took a picture of the filter in the housing but I didn’t want to get diesel on my phone. Is there such thing as different lengths?

Sorry for the dumb question.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the filter you are holding is for the 1000 Racor, I have 3.

Here’s what I ordered. I called the racorstore.com and while he was super short and annoyed that I was asking questions, he said the 900 series 2040 SM is now the 2040 N.

Yes the element for a 900 series is a 2040N-02 for a 2 micron. A -10 for a 10 micron element. And a -30 for a 30 micron. I use 10 micron in my primary filter so I don’t have to change the secondary filters as often.

Right. That’s my plan as well. But why are the ones in my housing an inch shorter. One thing I didn’t try was to install the new ones anyway. But seeing how the short ones bottom out, I didn’t think they’d fit.

Maybe I just need to try the new ones anyway.

Still strange how short the old ones are.

Are you sure it is too long? Did you hold it up against the removed filter?

Raycor filters fit tightly against the center post in the housing, did you push it down, they are not just drop in.

I have a 900MA waiting to go into my boat this winter so I measured the 2040 in it. It is 4 5/8” long.

This probably does not apply here, but there was a time eons ago when Racor for some reason put out filters for the 500s significantly shorter than previously, and they would provide a rubber-like filler device to go onto the post after the filter to hold the element down where it was supposed to be.

It may also be that somebody put the wrong filter in there because proper ones should come up just a bit below the top rim to allow room for the cap to fit down.

Try to install it. The bottom of the filter has changed, which may allow the sides to be longer.

Some newer racors have a spring thing on the central tube, you have to push element down to compress the spring. It is supposed to block flow when the element is out. Also some older elements won't fit in new housings.

I think you nailed it. I never tried to install it because of the obvious reason that it looked like it wouldn’t fit, I didn’t want to make a mess, and I probably ordered the wrong filters.

Fortunately I bright a couple of filters home with me to try to return. I grabbed one and looked at the bottom. It’s recessed. I think you are right. These are the correct “new” filters.

Did you measure the filters? I gave the length in a previous post.

On no I didn’t. I’ll do it in the morning and get back to you. Thanks.

If they are the same lenght then they will fit a 900. I took the filter out of my 900 in the garage and measured it.

Just measured mine. They are the same.

Thank you! I feel pretty stupid for not even trying to install the new ones but like I said, seeing the 1” difference in length and not wanting to make a mess, I just assumed I ordered the wrong ones.

Glad you got it worked out!!!! But still some good information in the replies that may help you or someone else in the future!!! IOW, not a stupid question and resulted in good discussion.

I was kinda surprised as to how long they actually are. I never really paid much attention until I measured the element in my new 900MA.
