Can someone recommend a good prop reconditioning company in the US. I am located in New Jersey.

When I hauled my boat out for the winter, I found a nice gouge in one blade with slight outer edge flaring on all blades.

We aren’t from your area so I can’t recommend a specific prop shop. But whatever shop you choose make sure they can scan the prop before and after the repairs so you know that it is done properly.

I have communicated with and dealt with Gabe and he has always been helpful. My first introduction to him & his shop was when he worked miracles on a friend's Volco IPS duo prop drive that tangled with a log in the Hudson R.

He does puck up & deliver to several marinas up & down the Hudson so you might find a place to drop off / pick up closer to you.

Hi John,

I discovered an ouchie when we hauled this year as well. Hale Propeller in Old Saybrook, CT https://www.halepropeller.com/ has been my goto for years.



They turned my prop around in a week.

Just curious. How many carry an extra prop(s) I know they are epensive but seems worth it.

With a single I thought it was worthwhile insurance.
I found a used one listed, made an offer and had it rebuilt.

Yes. Because when I bend one up, I want to be lifted out then swap the prop then back in the water in an hour. Without a spare, you get hauled and blocked for days until the prop comes back with all of the associated costs.
 
I have spare props, but I've stopped keeping them on the boat. I'm not a diver and my prop removal tools are typically at home. So if I trash a prop, I'm already at the mercy of needing a diver, or more likely a haulout. At that point, getting the props shipped or driven to me from the house isn't the end of the world, assuming I can't get a local prop shop to take care of the issue faster.

If I were cruising somewhere that getting spare props to me would be a problem or incredibly expensive, then I'd probably bring them along for the ride. But the rest of the time, it's not worth the weight, fuel, or storage space to drag them around.
 
I carry a spare. I do not carry the prop puller or the very large wrenches I need. THat's about another 100# of gear.
Many yards will have the gear to pull the prop and swap props even if I need a haul.
But without, then repairs can take at least a week and longer if shipping is involved.
 
I have spare props on board. I made a prop puller a couple of years ago and have an adjustable wrench that goes to 2.5” and fits the nuts. I also carry new 316 S/S cotter pins. I don’t like reusing them.
 
I do have spare props but not sure on their pitch and quality. I figured better to recondition the pair on the boat when I purchased it 3 years ago.
 
I asked the owner of Bulls Prop Shop in Beaufort, NC how much my wheels were new. He said "you don't have 30" wheels on that tug" I said "yes we do, and there's a spare set in the lazerett" his response cracked me up. "You don't want to know, but if you ever want to buy a nice used F250, you're golden"

We took ours to a shop that scanned them for free. Then if you want to repair them you just pay for repairs. So you could probably take them and have them scanned to find out what the size is.

You will not find a better shop on the east coast. Honest, trustworthy and extremely knowledgeable.

I had them recondition the props on my sailboats and they were the go to place for me when I dropped my props off my 42’ Grand Banks for a tune up.

[emoji106] I have a friend that he worked miracles on a set of Volco duo-props that made me a believer.
He checked my prop when I bought my boat and reported it was perfect and good to have a base line.
He helped my purchase and refurb a spare. I would not consider going anywhere else unless traveling and in a pinch which shouldn't be needed with a spare.

The Prop Shop in Pensacola, Fl is good. There is also another business in P'cola that does prop reconditioning but I don't know anything about them.
 
Tyler Dominey ph 912-264-2942 (www.dominey.com)in Brunswick Georgia is excellent and well known.
Also Peden's Prop Shop ph.662-423-9588, (Propstraightener.com) in Iuka,Miss.

Both are very good major shops that have props shipped from all over the country.

I had terrible results in Pensacola and finally had to go to Mary Esther/Destin to get the props fixed from the damage done in Pensacola by that Compuprop shop.
