Love those sorting trays

I have never seen those sorting trays for sale. I lust after them every time I see the my Pharmacist counting out pills.

I found a link to them at:
https://www.leevalley.com/en-gb/sho...ge-containers/70669-sorting-tray?item=93K8412. Don't know if I can wait till XMass.

If you buy from Lee Valley you will get on the mailing list. The catalog is tool porn.

I love peanut butter jars for hardware. They are free if you love peanut butter as much as me. I have jars from many decades ago that are starting to get brittle but for the first 10 - 20 years they are tougher then almost all the stuff you can buy.

Here is mine. The pictures don't do it justice. It has two levels on each side and holds a TON of fastners and various parts.

I have two of those in the "single" configuration (which is still two levels). I first filled them with fasteners and hardware 20 years ago, prior to heading out on a cruise. I thought those corner latches seemed a bit delicate.

19 years later those are still my favorite two storage boxes, and those seemingly delicate corner latches are still going strong. They have also never opened accidentally, and I do carry them "upright." Over the years they've been crammed into all kinds of less-than-gentle spots, and been through heat, humidity, and freezing temps too.

It hadn't occurred to me that they might still be available. Cool!

This discussion made me think about how much some of my storage boxes weigh so I broke out the scales and weighed the nuts and bolts box. It weighs 33.5 pounds. I was surprised how much it weighed.

These are the best

We use these from Harbor Freight. They’re the best because the little yellow bins come out so you can carry them with you to the job. Better than the divided sections. They come in different sizes

On our sailboat we had a workshop with a couple dozen of these boxes and intend to do the same on whatever trawler we end up with. Here’s a link to the post we did about it.

Storage solutions

There is no one solution but one I find very useful is to acquire a good supply of ziplock bags. My favorite is 4”x 6”. This allows you to keep like items together yet takes little more space than throwing everything in a box.

That is such a good point. I was on a sailboat (so granted, fewer square spaces), and as much as I wanted to have a box or bin for everything, Zip-Loc bags made so much sense, and such a superior use of space (I hated to admit it but finally had to).

There are more spaces where you can efficiently use a box shape on a trawler, but still not every place.

I keep my electrical crimps in Zip Locs. Each specific one in a small parts bag, and then all of the like-sized mini bags together in larger bags (pink, blue, yellow), and then all of those in a huge bag. Not quite as satisfying as a tidy box, but soo space efficient. No empty air, soft, and conformable.

I've collected a lot or bolts, screws, washers, you name it, I've got it! I was hoping to get some ideas on how to organize them and what kind of containers to use to keep them in. Looking forward to hearing your solutions...my mason jar is getting full!

I bought these in 2006 and they have been halfway around the world in almost daily use. I am pretty sure I got them at the container store in FL. I have 6 of them, one for electrical, one for plastic cable ties etc., one for small screws, one for larger hardware, one for Stainless fittings etc. and one for rubber bungs/etc.

I have not had a problem with parts emigrating from their compartments. They are actually stored on edge and the compartments are sufficiently tight to the lid that the parts remain in their correct compartments even in this storage configuration. ~Alan

I use a fishing tackle box. Lots of slots to put same size nuts, bolts, screws, etc. The bottom can handle larger "stuff". With it's handle it easy to move around with you where ever you need it.
