Loaded with stupid questions

Hi, I'm Mike and I've been observing, taking notes for a while. I'm doing this in preparation of boating as Lisa grew up around boating and is ready to jump back in.

We are retired and while she likes all things water; I've always thought water was all wet. So I expect my questions to be naive at best and wrong headed or heading at worst and not be a trial to anyone.

Welcome aboard! It helps if use the search feature before you post a question, especially if it’s not time critical. Also try to be detailed ie year, model number etc will help get a relevant specific response instead of a generic one.

Searching in all the wrong places.

Thanks for the tip. All the questions bursting to get off the keyboard have been searched and researched, err searched again, but I've had a time with the search function. Returns from searching don't often address my question, not sure why. Could be syntax, my lack of vocabulary, lines vs ropes etc.

To help, I've put a bucket of water under my desk to get my feet wet and I'll see if that helps the search function.

Welcome aboard, matey!! The more "stupid" questions you ask, the more you get to stand back and watch us fight over them - kinda like throwing raw meat into a pride of lions. NOT really, just sorta.

We love helping, but as said above the search function can get you volumes of answers about twin engines versus single, what anchor to use, and the pluses and minuses of dinghies. The perennial question of what boat you should choose is answered monthly in voluminous style.

Since you are all wet, maybe we need to hear from Lisa.

Mike, not to worry because we are full of stupid answers.

A word of caution: never believe the first answer. Always confirm the information.

"The only Dumb question is the one you don't ask" I think I was told that by one of my Med school professors many decades ago, not sure due to my CRS. I tell this and many other pearls of wisdom such as "When you hear hoof beats think of horses but watch out for the Zebra sneaking in to bite your ass" meaning "What's common is common but don't get complacent" and many others I've gathered over the years to the residents and med students, with the warning not confirming the information may hurt the patient or others. In this case it could be you :-0 I too lurk here gaining wisdom, my sea experience was long ago in my teens as a mate on a lobster boat, and my desire to return to cruising as I approach retirement...between classes, and replacing ACLS and ATLS training with Diesel mechanics and Marine electronics reading I am slowly gaining enough knowledge to be considered a Newbie...SO ask away, they only bite a little...

Asking questions is good. I still have plenty, and learn something new on the water every day. It’s the people that don't ask questions and think they have everything figured out are the dangerous ones.

Thank you Menzies and I agree that would be best, as she has more understanding, even though dated. She retired after 34 years from an industry where she answered upwards of 200 emails a day. So now the only reason she goes on line is to shop.

Peter, thanks for the input; I didn't think this was the place to ask questions. I looked at it more of a place to establish a rapport so hopefully the questions will receive some attention when asked. I thought engine questions would be in the power system threads, anchor questions in the anchors and anchoring section and so on.

However, to ask the first stupid question, when is the best time to ask a question to receive an answer? Would it be weekdays or weekends?

Welcome Bumpkin, okay I have to ask (and it helps the forum to know what region you're in with certain topics).... are you from Tampa... or AZ? I was confused by your Avatar geography info....

oh and as far as timing for a question; many of these guys have no idea what day it is (including me) so it doesn't matter- especially during a pandemic; what else do we have to do but peruse the forums.....

I didn't think the avatar questions really showed how boating would fit into my life. Lisa and I are domiciled in Prescott AZ. We both have family in FL and Tampa is the airport we fly in to visit and the area where we think we would dock our new boat. That of course could change.
