One of my Twin Disc MG-507-1 gears is running at about 270psi. It had been running at 160psi like the other side. (I verified 270psi is correct with a mechanical pressure gauge). The information I have from the Twin Disc manual suggests the pressure regulator (located under the shift control) is probably clogged or stuck.

While the parts schematic looks like it is a straight forward disassembly, I ask if anyone out there in Trawler Land has had this issue or had taken the shift control and regulator apart?

270 sounds about right. Look on the tag, it usually gives clutch pressure.

If regulator was stuck, clutch pressure would be sky-high, until something broke.

Also, pressure would not be constant with changing rpm if reg was sticky. It would go low with low rpm, high with high rpm.

Seen some TD gears where port and stbd ran at different pressures (by design) due to the different clutches in action.

You need to do a little more sniffing around. First is read tags. Next swap the test gauge to the other gear.

Check the owners manual but 160 is way low. Not enough pressure to engage fully. I think 270-300 is normal. I had one at 400 psi for 1000 hours before I sold that boat.

Thanks for the info. Both comments are helpful. I don't plan to take it apart until I'm sure I have a problem. The pressure is steady (with high and low RPMs) on both sides.

Have you put the mech gauge on the gear showing 160psi?
