hello,
Delighted to find your forum. I am researching a dream to cruise Mediterranean or any sunny climate . My wife and i wish some day to buy a motor trawler and cruise. Having no experience apart from renting inland shannon river cruisers here in ireland i hope to learn from all your experiences and knowledge. To all of you out there living the dream i salute you and hopefully see you some time.

Will be researching 40-50 foot displacement trawlers category a hopefully.
Greg there is not much trawler action here except for commercial . The temperate weather , small population and rough atlantic seas mean limited options . The world is a small place now and I hope to see some of it from the water in a warm climate .

I'm still looking for the place of origin of my mother's family. (McMain)

Stan, you might look at vacationing in the Eastern Med, and chartering a boat with captain there.
That would give you both experience with trawler type boats, for livability, and for a record of professional training, both to increase your ability and to calm down the insurers you will eventually have to deal with.
There seem to be quite a few such boats in the Adriatic and Greek waters.

You would be very welcome LOL . Kinsale, Cliffs of Moher and up the west coast is beautiful and best visited summer time.

I wish you well in the search for the Mc Main clan.

Thanks! We've spent some quality time up the west coast and I totally agree.

One of the things I'll need to learn is if the name McMain was originally McMahon, etc.

Genealogy

On the McMain name, research when the first of that name came over. If it was from the Civil War ghrough the Ellis Island period, many immigant names were phoneticized, shortened, or otherwise mangled.
My double great grandfather was one of 5 brothers who immigrated over a 3 year period ghrough Ellis Island. None kept the correct patronymic, von Scheurmann, and none got the same name. Sherman, Shurmann, von Sherman, Scherman, and ours, Schurman.
Check the immigration records in the Mormon Church Archives, and the census records in Newark and Hoboken, NJ. A lot of new immigrants ended up there for a while.

Thread drift I know, but that is an interesting topic. One of my grandfathers came over and purposely anglicized his name himself and changed the order, first and middle, because it wasn't a good time to be too German (Ewald to Eddie). When I was born decades later though, my family changed it back to the original. And then my other grandfather was from Galacia, which switched under Russian, Polish and Austrian domination every five minutes over history. The immigration agent used the Polish alphabet spelling on the ship's passenger list (Pec) but once he landed grandad changed it to Petz using the English alphabet, so the pronunciation was closer. Fascinating stuff, but it takes some Sherlock Holmes sleuthing to reconstruct some name histories.
