Hi all, does this sound about right? I'm amazed at how thorough Robert Fiala has been. He is the boats broker and he found me people with great reviews in the PNW. Anyone know the people below and what to expect? 1987 CHB PONDEROSA


We are all set for ”Dream Too's” demonstration, marine/mechanical surveys and haulout next Wednesday(7.8.2020). I have included all of the appropriate parties on our day including Cale Mathers(Marine Surveyor), Kevin Ambrose (Mechanical Inspector) and Tom & Kathy with CSR Marine(Haulout facility).

ITINERARY: WEDNESDAY-7.8.2020

8/9am: Cale Mathers(Marine Surveyor) & Kevin Ambrose(Mechanical Inspector) will arrive to “Dream Too”
9:30am: “Dream Too" to depart from Fisherman’s Terminal. Dock 8, Slip 30
12pm: Haul & Hang @ CSR Marine
1pm: Splash & return to Fisherman’s Terminal

Please bring two checks for the marine surveyor and mechanical inspector. You may pay via credit card for the haul and hang.
Look forward to see everyone next Wednesday(7.8.2020).

What is the first online course ertification I should be taking that the state of WA requires. I sense I should get started on this stuff.
 
Not sure what if any the Washington state requires as to classes. But that is where I would start looking and see what is required. Boat/US has an online class. I would also ask the insurance company what they want from you as to training. Good luck.
 
Geico isn't requiring a thing. Is $1450 a year to much?

I clicked on the link for WA boaters card. Do you know about how long it will take, (total newbie here).

its been a while since I took mine but I think the course is a minimum of 4hrs long but longer if you take notes (which i suggest). It can be done at your own pace through, if you do a section or two each each day you will be done in about a week to a week.5. It has probably changed since I took it, all the info should be on the website. Yes its tedious and long but the information is very important and will make a lot more sense when used actually on the water and not just on a screen. Happy clicking

For a new boat owner that isn’t too bad a quote.
 
I had Cale Mathers do my boat a few months ago. He is highly respected and did a good job on my boat. He missed a few minor things but generally dug pretty deep.

Insurance is a bit high. Try out Travelers, they are more reasonable in the PNW.

There is an excellent PNW insurance broker right here on the forum, "Pau Hana", with many happy customers, why not contact him?

Robert has set you up with some excellent professionals- Cale Mathers is a top notch surveyor, Kevin Ambrose is renowned for his expertise, and CSR is a great yard. Cale and Kevin have done my last 2 surveys with excellent results.

You're in good hands.

As a brand new boat owner with a large boat just getting insurance is a good deal.

It has been a while since I did it. I think it took me about 15-20 minutes. None of it was new info so it was quick. It is very good, if very basic information. So it would be worth taking your time to absorb it.
 
The Washington boaters’ card is a pretty simple online course/test. It seemed mostly about how not to run over people on personal water craft (jet skis).

My wife and I have been taking the StarPath online navigation course. It is very detailed and well worth the time and effort. Though the time investment is considerable.

We also hired Linda Lewis to give us some initial training in handling our boat (3 days). She was terrific. She has a 100 ton USCG captain’s license and knows her stuff. Her preferred marina to commence instruction is Shilshole Marina, though she is willing to work with folks at Elliot Bay Marina. She likes Shilshole because the fairways are a bit bigger that Elliot Bay.

America's Boating Club has great instructional programs. The beginning course qualifies you for a Washington State Boaters Card. You may also want to consider joining a local squadron.

I'll second this suggestion.
IMO their courses are well done and by joining a local chapter you will expand your boater network instantly.
Many activities and courses are shut down due to the virus but online ones are always available and I'll bet the local chapter can put you in touch with their "live" instructor if you have any questions.

Hi Ducatihottie - Did the survey happen? How did it work out?? (Sorry if I missed the answer on one of your other threads...)
 
Insurance seems maybe a bit high but as other said it depends on your boat and primarily the HP. I got my policy on my Beneteau ST44 for about 2/3 that through Global Marine/Markel.

Someone said Linda Lewis... I can second, third and fourth her. Best thing we have ever done was hire her. I thought we hired her as my wife had never spent time on boats but over the years we have had her do training 5 times now and it probably saved my marriage and my wife loves boating.
