My first Long Range Cruiser

Hello, just bought my perfect boat and am ready to do some cruising. 10 year plan to do the West coast to Alaska, South America to Chile, South Pacific to Australia, the Caribbean, Bahamas, and the Med to end in Croatia. Actually 12 years, taking the first two years to update and work the bugs out if there are any.

I have no exposure to cruising groups or rallies or other people who share the same dreams. Thought I might find some here. Leaving for La Paz Mexico in December, on an off CUBAR year, anyone going down in December?

Yes, congratulations! Those are fantastic boats! Start socializing around the San Diego area local harbors, you'll come up with plenty of people who are planning to make the trip, and many who have done it several times. Sailors in particular, with whom you have a few more similarities than sports fishing guys, but boaters are a friendly and helpful group.

Beautiful ship! The Hatteras line of LRC's have been a favorite for years. Still dreaming of finding a 58' and cruising the Carribean.

Welcome! We've been onboard your boat and very strongly considered buying it last year before we landed on our Kadey Krogen 54. It is perhaps the nicest Hatteras LRC we've ever been on. That ER is amazing and she's incredibly well equipped.

So glad it found an owner who knows what to do with it. We have similar dreams and plans. It would be terrific to meet up before you head out. Are you keeping her up in Anacortes?

Thank you! No, I brought her 1300 miles down the coast to San Diego in April. It was an amazing journey, so beautiful.

It is so nice to see a post where the member has his ducks properly lined up. Many posters start out by saying "In ten years I am going to buy a boat" then list an itinerary very similar to yours. Needless to say, most never get beyond the dreaming stage.

You have the perfect boat, a great plan, probably have the dough and most certainly have the time carved out.

Congratulations on a life well lived, enjoy your adventure. Keep in touch. It is almost inevitable that you will eventually run into some problem, major or minor, we love helping.

If you haven't already, get involved with the Hatteras Owners Forum (which may still have an LRC sub-group), and its sponsor, Sams Marine. Call Sam's and introduce yourself, giving them your hull identification number, and they will be invaluable in providing advice, information and parts for your specific boat. One of the greatest advantages of being a Hatteras owner.

We cruised a 56MY for many years and it too proved to be the perfect boat for us. We also have been on two 65LRCs, and a few 58LRC's. For others here, a 65LRC is essentially a stretched 58LRC with an almost identical layout. Hatteras did this frequently, as they did in using many of the same components across the line over several years. A friend's 42LRC series II had much in common with our 56MY.

Here's my best advice - ask your question (almost no matter what it is!) on TrawlerForum sooner rather than than later. I can't count the number of problems I've had solved here - these are some smart and experienced boaters!

No problems...yet...

I have been seeing quire a few comments on people not being able to get insurance on boats in the 30 to 50 years old range. My boat is 33 years old but it is already insured so it doesn’t seem to be an issue. I was wondering about boats like the Hatteras LRCs that are around the 45 year old range and getting a new policy issued on them.
