Doing some TLC work

I have my 38' sitting in the shed for some TLC in the way of replacing the Fender rails plus stripping the bottom for a re-paint. Also added some glass around the shaft struts and installed a drain plug. *It is going to be a bit before I can get it out for a cruise so now is a great time to get all the little things looking better.

Hi Elwin, it appears that we have the same boat. What year is your? Engines?
I did the major bottom work 4 years ago. Stripped it down to the gel coat, replaced cutlas bearings and shaft packing. I should have done the rudders at the same time but ran out of time.
The main goal this winter is to address a few soft spots on the deck.

Hi Max, 1985 is the year and it has twin 135 Ford Lehmans with just a little over 3khrs on each.

Lots of time before my sailing time so work work work to do..*

1.*I used VC17 on the boat bottom.*Trouble is it goes on a bright bronze but turns to a charcoal color on contact with water. The bottom stripe is dark blue so it will match.**
2. Up in the bow the rail is busted so fixed it.
3. The rails are done and look good. Forward head is fixed. Top rail is fixed as good as the rest of it where it was damaged.
The things left to do...
1. Repair hose on hot water tankl
2. Leak in water system
3. Clean up, tie up wiring on ER floor
4. Rear window leaks starboard side
5. Smell from toilet system
6. Replace anoides
7. Clean rust stains off hull
8. Seal anything I think is leaking into core.
9. Do spots on handrail where finish is missing
10. Do top wood stripe like I did with fender rail*
Debaiting on repairing the forward deck ( soft floor ).*
This involves cutting out the anti skid areas, removing the old balsa core, fitting the void with either balsa or plywood, sealing it and replacing the anti skid area and making a good cosmetic repair. Very little in material but two* to three weeks work.
Oh well.. nothing that TLC can't take care of

That's a lot to bite off at one time.
I had the same problem with the rub rail. A screw head was sticking out enough to catch the strap ion the travel lift. I scarfed in 4 feet or so and you can't tell it ever happened.
My main project is the soft deck. The worst is along the aft cabin sides. Especially at the base of the davit.**I plan to get on that after the first of the year.**

I am surprised to see trim tabs on your boat.* Do*affect the performance?

Hi Max,

Not really, as a matter of fact just the opposite. Trim tabs improves the preformances, improves the ride especially in choppy water, helps with obtaining better fuel efficiencies and helps correct any weight imbalances.*

It is getting closer to be completed for this years project..

Got a little smell coming from the forward toilet.. checked it out and stipped it to pieces and got it all cleaned up now..

Finally finished for this year.. now placed on stands until lauched time. Genset is sent out for overhaul ( will not stay running ) unless I need to purchase a new one. Next year's project is a bow thruster and redo the foredeck.. Going to change the name before launch too ( from Gypsea to Ocean Breeze ).

wow It looks like Edwin had a lot of work to do on his Ocean Aleaxander I t must be nice to be that handy
I am looking for someplace or someone to service my windshield wipers
I love the boat with the exception it rolls quite a bit when the wind and waves hit us braodside
Iamalso looking for an icemaker replacement

A common cause of toilet smell is the raw water feed line.* Most folks look to the storage tank for odor.* The feed line becomes a large petri dish for bacteria growth, especially if there is any droop in the feed hose that acts like a water trap.** One solution is to replace the feed hose with an antibacterial hose.* This stuff is very expensive.* A good fix I developed is to add a 1.5 inch "T" to the feed line.* Locate it next to the toilet with an in and out reducer at right angels and the third port fitted with a screw in cap.*Mount this cap up. *You can then add toilet bowl scent / bleach tablets to the system.* Some of the chemical will leach back into the system after a flush and keep the feed line sweet.* It will also introduce a small amount of scent into the flush water.

We got it all taken care of now but will look into this idea.

Finally all finished with the maintenance for this year. Last going off changed out a tab actuator, a new hydraulic pump to make them work, two new wiper motors, new HDS Plotter, new AIS, spit shine and ready for the water. Now come on August.

Edwin Have you figured out the fuel consumption? my gues with mine is 2.5-3.0 gph @1500rpms
