1978 Morgan Heritage For Sale

I have I think the year is a1978 Heritage trawler. Owned it about 5 years and done a lot of work to it. Thinking it maybe worth about 35000 to 40000.
What do y’all think.
Story on it: lately new bottom job, shower, water bladders. Up stairs helm and rod down by the rudder rebuilt.
When I bought it we installed a stainless manifold and elbow.
It has been about 600 miles on it since I had it along with to bottom jobs.

Second Ted's advice. Photos will light up this thread - the Heritage Yachts West Indian 36, designed by Charley Morgan and Chuck Neville, is one of the handsomest "trawler yacht" profiles ever, in my opinion. At a guess, this West Indian has the original Perkins Range 4, probably the 6-354, in which case the new stainless / elbow is a nice touch. The reference to a bladder tank rings a bell with me - is this the West Indian that was for sale a few years back, out of Orange Beach, Alabama?

In any case, the price range you suggest is in the ballpark. Last year a very fine example of the marque went for around $40K, in South Florida.

Also a suggestion to change the title of the thread to something like, XXX boat for sale. It will immediately let people know what the thread is about. I almost didn’t click on the thread because the name was somewhat ambiguous.

I think these are a sharp looking boat. There is also one for sale in Traverse City, Michigan. The centerline stringer on a twin engine model has a very tall height and relatively narrow thickness. Both engines attach to this tall centerline stringer. Moisture intrusion is something you want to have a sense for. Not ideal size for the larger person. Sharp boats though. Love the lines.

Charley Morgan explained to me that this boat was designed around the Perkins Range Four series engine. As far as I know, it was only after he closed Heritage Yachts and sold the molds that Chris Craft re-launched the design with a twin-engine option. The one for sale in Maryland is a nice-looking version of the Chris Craft product with twin 85 hp Perkins.

It does seem as though the engine compartment with twins would be mighty snug, unless you're coming straight off of a sailboat!

When I look at that boat, it reminds me of my own 34 LRC with twin 4.236s. No doubt the ERs vary in size but on my Californian (built by Marshall Boats), I have to do an Army crawl but I can crawl completely around each engine if I need to. And I'm no small guy. The 4.236 has a relatively small footprint compared to the 6.354 or Cat 3208.

Will have pictures up tomorrow. The boat has a single Perkins 6354 natural, westerbeke gen. Will be taking it out again Friday and return Monday.

Always loved the lines of that boat, although it can be distorted with too much canvas up top. Pretty amazing layout too. I’ve only been aboard twins but heard the single makes for much simpler access.

Looks to be 32 to 34 feet but you don't specify. Nice looking boat, Price seems about right.

A few more details

The boat paperwork said it a 35 ft 6 inch boat without swim platform and anchor pulpit. It has plenty of room. It has a capt. room and the v berth. Bathroom with shower.
The Perkins pushes the boat about 7 mph. I believe it burns a little under 2 gallons a hour. Very good on fuel. Fuel capacity about 400 gals. Fresh water tanks hold almost 70 gallons.

At least we know it has good stability to 90 degrees!

You keep mentioning the Range Four deries engine. I am pretty sure that engine did not come out until the mid to late 80s. The Range Four was to Perkins what the "Super Lehman" was to Lehman and they both came out about the same time. I think late 70s was a bit early for that engine. It was indeed a 6-354. But the Range Four was an updated version of that engine with a little more power NA.

Baker, you may be right. I'll go back to my 2012 interview with Charley to see if I am mis-remembering exactly which Perkins he mentioned as the heart of the West Indian trawler. (It's also possible that he mis-remembered what they used, although he was pretty clear as to what he did and did not remember, thirty-five years after the fact).

In the meantime, my on-line research hasn't turned up anything definitive on the question of when the Range 4 was in production. If you find anything, please share.

The boat is still for sale. It is 35.5 feet long on the paperwork. Has a Perkins 6.354 diesel engine. Westerbeke generator. All it good running condition.
