I have shortlisted two alternators that I like, the Zena's and the Electrodyne's.

The Zena's are with brushes, while the Electrodyne is brushless.

All other things being equal, what is best, brushless or with brushes?

Brushless, Brushes wear out, brush springs get hot and fail.

More important than brushes is the alt rating HOT .

If you are going to use a 3 -4 stage V regulator to rapidly recharge a house set , the best HOT rating will do the quickest job.

FF

The Zena looks to be the only one that can accept an external regulator, so it's probably the only one that you should consider.

I've not heard of a brushless that will accept an external regulator - is there one?

Yes, the G150 Electrodyne has external rectifier and external regulator

Hmmm... I don't see any reference to that model on their website or on a web search.

No, its not on their web pages, but I emailed them to ask about it and they said that they are still producing it. They also forwarded data information etc.

The G150 requires the G2181 remote rectifier and the E243-4 remote regulator (can be exchanged with a Balmar Max Charger 612).

Its about double the price of the Zena.
