Travels of "Emma B" (JD powered Helmsman)

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Oh yes even Starbucks.

Housing prices in Juneau have been very high for decades because of all the government activity there. And there’s limited suitable ground as well.

But now that the oil royalties have been vastly reduced the government jobs have fallen so real-estate prices have mostly normalized. Think I’d rather be in Sitka now that I’m old though. Juneau is mostly for young people. Would be fitting for me to go back as I started out there.

Currently docked in Cambell River for fuel and provisions. A knock on the hull turned out to be Conrad off Big Blue, a Nordic Tug 42 docked a few fingers south of me. Nice chat in the relatively warm air of this evening. I’m sure we will have a rum at some point before haul out time for Emma B. Off to Lund tomorrow.

Easy trip across the Strait in virtually flat calm seas.
Lucked upon 2 humpbacks just before Lund..
Always a treat to watch

Lund, then Powel River... calm seas!
It’s getting late in the season and up until about 3pm today I wasn’t sure if I’d chance trying to make the Broughtons this year. Fall weather is fluky at best..
Forecast shows Johnstone Strait ok Sunday morning so I made the call and I’m off. Copeland islands tonight. Octopus islands tomorrow, Douglas Bay, just after Whirlpool Rapids Saturday and if all goes well... Lagoon Cove Sunday!
Pic is Copeland Islands from anchor tonight.

Darn it. Just missed you again. Just getting on the ferry to Powell River.

Given a choice, sun shine is better but you can’t deny the mystical beauty out here on overcast days as well.
Left the Copeland’s to head to Octopus Islands. Major Islet, big bald rock just outside had both a seal colony at one spot and a sea lion colony at another. Fishimust be good there.

Was blessed with a calm passage across the strait to Hoskyn’s Channel. With a SE on the beam, this could have been uncomfortable to not doable.
Even a grey day was pretty turning up the channel, then into Beazley Pass, which was timed right to just catch the beginnings of the ebb my way
That’s Beazley beyond my bow rail

That’s where we like to go in the winter in the car.
We stay at the sizable motel near the top of the hill.
This time of year you could make a nice little side trip over to Solintula.

Eric, you seem to be thinking of Port McNeill not Port Neville

It’s ok Eric...
“Senior moment” ... I get them all the time
Actually, my posts are a few days behind and I’ll be docked at Port McNeil in 15 minutes.
You have ESP

HaHa I thought you were mak’in good time .....
Very good to see you Ted. We’ll prolly make a car run up there in a month or so.
Can’t get away w much here on TF. Lots of “Ports”

Why I love the Broughtons

Crossed the lower end of blackfish Sound and up to Port McNeil for fuel and provisions (the wine was getting low)
First time at a dock in a week.
Check the anchor....couldn’t see it from the helm.
Proof Emma B isn’t a dock Queen :)

Looks like you tried to anchor in Port McNeil. As I recall it’s quite shallow w lots of grass like that.

Nope
From last anchorage in the Broughtons
Windy tomorrow....will head back Friday.
A few boat jobs and clean the dingy to keep occupied
Sunny and not too bad out!

Returned to the Broughtons Friday and sat out Saturdays blow in snug Joe Cove on Eden island. Although it didn’t stop the constant rain, there was barely a ripple from the strong winds outside.
The old float is getting pretty tuff.

Mr. D,
Is it winter yet?
Rained heavily this morning here and was not predicted.
Don’t know Joe Cove or Eden Is. Must be where I haven’t gone.
Stay warm and stay safe.

Eden Island is next island south of Broughton island. Joe Cove is on the S side of Eden Island.
The old float is getting more than tired now...
It literally poured while I was there! And blew!
This is a very safe, secure Cove in a blow!

It was better 5 years ago, but not much. Are you making the long run to Lady Boot Cove next?

Back then it had the “condemned “ sign on it ?
Headed out looking for a new anchorage. At the suggestion of a friend, I went through “old passage” which was quite narrow and full of kelt in spots but fun and funky to do. With no set plan, I ended up anchored in a quiet bay about 3/4 way up Simoon Sound. Nice bright spot, pretty and great sunset view too. Only about 25ft at low tide so easy anchoring. I love the sunny spots as the solar panel gets a chance to work.

Pics are

Yea that Joe Cove float looks much like the floats at Namu the last time I was there. And that pulls up images of Butedale.
As always thank you for the wonderful pictures.

Slow putt over to Qwatsi Bay
Echo Bay sure looks quiet this time of year.
Max was still away
Quiet Netflix night...just me and the birds...and seals

Putted down to Lagoon Cove
I was the only cruising boat there other than the caretakers. I guess the young couple found the winters too quiet and lonely so headed back home until spring.
