Hurricane Barry

Spent the morning at the slip getting Old School ready for whatever is headed her way. This is one weird storm, nobody seems to have a handle on it. But, I expect flood waters so moved her out into the fairway and tied as well as possible. Had to get out from under cover because the paravane outriggers might punch a hole in the roof. Hopefully this one moves through quickly but all predictions are for huge rain. We shall see.

Good luck everyone. Barry shouldn't be much more than a bit of wind and a LOT of rain.

My insurance company reminded me that I submitted a written hurricane preparedness plan to them - they're so thoughtful, that way.

Hey Parks, i’m a fair ways inland on the Tickfaw River. The wind really isn’t an issue, it’s the flood water that keeps you worried. The Tickfaw drains a lot of acreage to the north which includes Louisiana and parts of southern Mississippi. The mouth of the Tickfaw empties into Lake Maurepas which empties into Lake Ponchartrain which then goes around New Orleans and eventually empties into the Mississippi Sound. With rainfall going downhill and the hurricane pushing water uphill into Ponchartrain and Maurepas, it gets real dicey. I’ve been through 4 floods at this slip in the 10 years there, sometimes takes a week before the waters get low enough to drive to the slip.
Should know how things look by Sunday afternoon.

You got her out of the shed and it looks like you’ve used good long lines so she can rise with the water. Looks good to me.

Of course bear in mind that this is from a guy whose boat sank in the last hurricane to hit here. ��

Just to give me something more to worry about, why’d she sink? I had to unplug to get outside the slip so the bilge pump is on battery power till this is through. But, 2 new 6 volt golf cart batts so should be good, plus rain has never been an issue w/ this boat.

I’m not sure what happened but I have a theory.

I tied the boat up facing down river where I expected the strongest winds.
I also installed a spare bilge pump with the hose tied to the stern cleat about two feet above the water.

When I came back after the storm the boat was tied facing the other direction and the spare pump hose was inside the boat.

I think what happened is that the marina folks had turned my boat around to make more room for another boat. Instead of securing the hose to a cleat they just stuck it out one of the cockpit scupper. This might have allowed it to touch the water. When the pump ran and then stopped, the water left in the hose ran back down to the bilge and started a siphon that eventually killed the batteries and sank the boat.

That’s my theory anyway. I have no way to be sure what happened. There was no hull damage.

I had the boat refloated in two days. She was well insured.
