I just got an email from Costco for its Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi that promises 4% cash back at Gas stations, which sounds pretty good for no annual fee. Here is their fine print:

4% cash back on eligible gas worldwide, including gas at Costco, for the first $7,000 per year in gas purchases and then 1% thereafter.
Certain Non-Qualifying Purchases. You will only earn 1% cash back, not 4%, for gas purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs other than Costco or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes.

Does anyone have any experience with using a this card for gas at marina's? Specifically in the PNW?

Any other gas cards that would work for marine fuel?

There is usually a dollar limit on the cash back as well, is that all of the fine print related to cash back?

Thank you for the link. They max their 4% gas cash back at $7,000 total purchases ($280 max cash back) but they don't specify exactly where you can purchase fuel, except to say it is worldwide.

Otherwise it's 1% cash back with no specific limit on the amount or type of purchases or cash back.

Right, I think it comes down to if the fuel docks register as gas stations or marine services, which is why I asked for experience with it. I just checked my credit card bill and the last fill up at the port of Poulsbo didn't register as a gas station on my Chase Card, so probably wouldn't have received 4% back on it.

I imagine it would be hit and miss with marine fueling, and as it explicitly stated non-automobile as a non-qualifying you can't try to make a case for it.

You hit the nail on the head. We have the American Express Blue Preferred card with good cash back on fuel.

Of all the Marinas / Fuel docks we have filled up at, not one of them has registered as the Gas category.

Haha, this is very timely, I have the Costco card and have been happy with it but have been recently wondering if there is a better overall card out there, a friend suggested looking at Clark Howard’s website as he lists some options?

Our club's fuel dock is supplied by a fuel distributor that sells mainly to vehicles. Apparently Costco has not realized that when I put a few hundred bucks worth of gas through the pump it's not going into my car.
