D.I.Y Hookah system

Not sure which category to list this under so here goes.
In our marina a serious barnacle problem has been created over the last 5 years necessitating lifting and washing several times a year which is getting expensive for a pensioner!!
After reading an article recently about building a HOOKAH type unit purely for cleaning my underwater area and servicing anodes I decided to give it a go.
Utalizing two epoxy (food grade) lined fire extinguisher cylinders pressurized by a small oil free 12v compressor then to a manifold which will feed a pressure gauge and ail filter then air hose to a second stage regulator.
The problem I am having here is finding out what type of filter to employ, charcoal etc as when I mention under water breathing apparatus to any compressor people here the "blinds come down and no body is home" !!!


Can anybody give me advice on this topic, type of fiter, does my system sound workable etc etc.

Have you tried the regulator with airl supplied by the compressor? Most hookahs use a very low pressure, secondary type regulator that works with 50 psi or less air supply.


The standard scuba regulator needs more pressure than that to work successfully.


FWIW if your compressor is really oil free then all you need is a cartridge particulate filter to catch any stuff coming through. Charcoal is for hydrocarbon vapors and you won't have them with that kind of compressor.

For years I lightly used a small oiless compressor with no tanks. No issues, worked great.


Added a small particulate filter...not banning on having the compressor near any exhaust fumes.


Uness you have someone to side watching the compressor, I see no real advantage to having some buffer tanks.

I overlooked mentioning my stage 2 has been modified for low pressure. My reason for wanting a charcoal filter or similar is that I can detect a slight epoxy/hydrocarbon smell from the cylinders. My reason for employing the cylinders is that it allows me a bit of back up air for other small applications.
