Lost my Mainship 34 to Florence, so the hunt begins again for a boat. Looking at some with Detroit 8V53N diesels. Looking for thoughts, experiences, warnings about these. All my previous boats had Perkins.

Thanks.

The only thing I 'think" I know about the 53 series of Detroits is they are louder than others.

Check recent threads here for one on Detroit Diesels. Lots of information and opinions. I believe the OP was Lou Tribal.

I had 6V53s in a previous boat. Yes they are somewhat loud but it is a deep throaty sound. They do leak so stock diapers. My mechanic made a poor man’s version of Air Seps that worked very well to contain the oil mist from the air boxes. Having said all that, they are reliable and run forever. Parts are available and relatively cheap. And it doesn’t take a computer to diagnose them, almost any mechanic can work on them.
