Started a total refit for everything below the waterline this winter in preparation for heading south next winter.

Thought it a shame to do everything and not rebed the bronze bolt on stern tube in the bilge.* Asked here and other forums how it was attached.* Everything LOOKED good there...boy was I wrong.

Answered my question yesterday...went ahead and tried to remove the stuffing box assembly.* The stern tube WAS just lag bolted to the hull...glad I dug into the setup.* The clamps holding the hose to the tube looked good on top but were rusted just about through on the bottom, the adjusting*bolts on the packing adjuster were wasted from galvanic corrosion and 2 of the stainless lag bolts were wasted away for more than half of the threads and only tight from the caulking on the heads.

I'm guessing the previous owner of 25+ years never did anything except possible a new piece of rubber hose through the years.

Next is pull the prop and cut off the solid coupler to get the assembly out and renewed/replaced and use a split coupler to make future repairs easier.

And of course NONE of this would be noticed by even the worlds greatest surveyor.
 
he also missed hydrolysis/blisters*so bad....just finished grinding off the whole bottom (paint, gel coat, mat layer and in some places into a layer or two of the roving!)..plus lots more throughout the boat...

his only defense was that I said I was buying the boat anyway so don't write up any insurance showstoppers..but a verbal might have been nice!

my faith in surveyors remains at an all time low. I know they are gonna miss some things...but what I resent is that insurance companies make you pay for them on a regular basis.

What I resent, in addition to required BS surveys,*is Ins Cos make you pay TOO MUCH for everything - - > Always!

Point in fact:

This year for seemingly no reason my SAFECO annual*boat ins coat*nearly doubled, from $639.00 to $1,120.00 Geeeezzz!* I had no claim ever*and was*not late on any payment.* When I tried to call SAFECO HQ all*I could get was the recorded run around.* Placed my broker, who handles all my ins, on the cause and she came back saying that the ins co had placed a new rating schedule*on the area where I docked my boat.* There was no reduction she could get.

So...*I began calling all over to other ins brokers and companies... for some reason they all were pretty much in line with my suddenly increased ins charge; some a bit lower some a bit higher.* No one could/would tell me why my boat docking area had such a huge rating*cost increase.

I got pissed!* I*began seeking top level adjusters at SAFECO HQ and would not let up!* Finally an executive from the rating dept called me.* She said the reason my area insurance had increased is due to storms back east.* WTF - My boat has no chance of the same conditions and my ins doubles!* I said to her I would need to change ins providers then because it is incorrect that with no claims and on time payments that my boat ins should suddenly double.* She said Good Luck!* That blew my small attempt at leverage - LOL.* She probably already knew that all ins cos were acting in similar fashion for raising rates.*

As all ins cos were affected at different level fron East coast stotms, I call that national*Big Biz collusion!

Insurance co. spread their costs , we all pay for unlicensed or drunk drivers.
 
That was the point of this thread...I hope all you 80's vintage boats are looking under the surface of thongs otherwise you are GONNA NEED good insurance...

No problem , vote with your feet, make their huge profits yours, self insure for the hull part , just keep the liability.

The savings you have wont show up as "income" and are worth about 40% more as they are tax free.
