We are cruising Europe on our 40ft power boat and were looking for a good Electronic Navigational system with charts for my laptop. Cruising the PNW I used Rosepoint Coastal Explorer, is this still the best value to use in European rivers and canal waters. any input is appreciated.

Inland or Coastal ?
Our cruising partners were given a Garmin before we left Ireland. It often showed we were in a field when cruising river or canal locks that were closed up years ago. On one occasion 6 miles 'out' on a river entrance as we approached from the sea.
If you use electronics then be absolutely sure they are updated to the latest version.
Personally I use charts with a simple Garmin GPS 71 as a backup.
Safe cruising.

We are cruising inland on the Rivers and Canals of Europe. I was looking for a laptop navigational program and was wondering what is working for others. I currently use Rosepoint Coastal Explorer but am open to suggestions. Thank you for your input.

We personally used sea charts and pilot books for each country we visit. If you go on to Imray,Laurie & Norie.co.uk website they have a list of all pilot books and charts.

thanks for the help, I will look at Imray...do you use any computer charting?

Hello Bernd.
My friend uses a Garmin chart plotter and despite being regularly 'updated' was in fact not as accurate as it should be and he was disappointed in its performance.
I use sea charts for the salty stuff and get them updated at a chart agent just before leaving.
As well as marking secondary ports I also mark reciprocal course/bearing, ports.
With these I use a simple Garmin 72 GPS, then if for any reason there's an electronic breakdown I can always navigate to a safe port.
I may sound old fashioned, I do embrace practical electronics but not gizmo's.

Pilot books are written with practical experience and give a better reflection.
You may wish to look here on TF for my posts 'Ireland to the Mediterranean Part 1' and Windmills and Wine' to help and give you idea's.
Safe cruising.
