Thank you RTF, and others who remembered. I wrote briefly about ANZAC Day on IR`s Harbor Chat thread several days back.
ANZAC Day began after WW1, largely remembering the members of the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps defeated at Gallipoli in Turkey. It came to represent all theatres of war and conflict in which Australians served and currently serve. Dawn Remembrance services are widely held in Australia, and at Gallipoli itself, and other places overseas. Including Villers Brettoneux in northern France where 100 years ago Australian(and I think Canadian) forces defeated German forces, liberating the village. Australians are welcomed to the village which features many things Australian,in gratitude.
A large cemetery, memorial,and recently a museum, are maintained by Australia at Villers Brettoneux. We visited there last year, though not on ANZAC Day it was a moving experience. Northern France has many memorials,including some provided by USA. The land itself has been visibly altered by the explosions and earthworks of war.
We were relieved to move on to the Champagne area after our visit.
