Hp from SN?

Is it possible to determine the hp of an engine from the serial number? Specifically, a Perkins T6-354. The number is TU33247U850169W. The owner says it has 240hp. I know these started at 165 and went up over time. From Boatdiesel charts I learned that the engine was built in the UK in 1992, but what hp? Seems like a significant jump in hp for the same displacement.

The 'T' at the beginning says it has a turbo so it could be 240 hp. Maybe 200 if there is no aftercooler.

Try Caterpillar since they bought Perkins about 20 yrs ago.
Also try Trans Atlantic Diesel as they service them.

Nothing on line that I could find gives the HP though.

If I remember correctly, the manual for the motor(s) explained reading the serial number right in the first few pages.
You should be able to find that manual online without too much trouble.
The 6-354 started at something like 120 hp, and later versions with the infamous manicooler and turbo went to at least 240.
They seemed to all have some kind of problems, mostly in the cooling systems.
I am not overflowing with fond memories of the Perkins motors that I have encountered over the years!

Info I have is 207 to 220 hp determined by rpm, 2250 to 2600. But that's not running rpm because the engine is pleasure rated. That usually means 1-2 hours at rated hp for every 12 running hours. Continuous rpm would be about 2000 for the 220 hp rating.

The 200 hp version IS aftercooled.
What you likely have is a T6.3544 which is known as the "range 4 "series.
It came in a 165 hp version that is NOT aftercooled, a 200 hp version that is aftercooled, and a 240 hp which is also aftercooled. (there was also a 275 hp version).
Those are the BHP or brake horsepower ratings, not "shaft hp" which is why the numbers like 207 and 185 come from.
I no longer have my serial number chart so I can't determine exactly what you have.
And yes the coolers are the problems with those Perkins engines. They are very pricey to replace, so take care of what you have.
