What makes a trawler yacht a trawler yacht?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
No, I can't help.

A trawler is a state of mind or a life style thing. There is not a specific type of boat that fits. Many, many types of boats can fit an individual's life style.

Others will disagree no doubt, but debate is pointless IMO.

A friend calls me a "yacht owner" when there are people around and he wants to embarrass me.

One definition of a "yacht" that I have heard is, "Women can wear heels on a yacht." Another on is "A yacht is a boat large enough to carry a boat on deck."

Really though, it's anyone's guess what that name means. Some folks say our trawlers aren't really trawlers.

i was always of the mindset that a yacht had to be minimum 40' and geared more towards the pretty lifestyle than work boatish....
also, trawler, or troller(?) leans me towards a slower, its more about the economy/journey then the arrival times.......i never really liked the concept of "fast trawler"...just seems like bridging a gap i dont care to utilize
of course, the first time i have problems up streaming a swift current or out running a storm i may feel different

As regards what makes a boat a yacht? I'd say insecurity.

What’s the goal of defining these kind of thing to others? how to define a feeling, mindset, way of life or whatever you will name it?
Important thing is that we all know what it is, whatever it is for each other, and the ones who do not know or understand and need definition are those who see it from outside and cannot understand, whatever the definition would be.

All our pleasure boats are yachts. However only the ritzy ones are called that.

TugYacht 33,
Think of “Picnic Boats” .. yacht? Yes in my book.

David,
I don’t think the lifestyle of the owner has anything at all to do w the definition of either a trawler or a yacht. Don’t see a connection. The boat stand’s alone as a trawler or not.

Tom B,
Always wondered what you looked like.

To me a yacht is crewed, the owner comes to visit and relax. Usually flying in, and rarely, but that's not part of the definition.

If the owner needs to put in any work beyond what gives them pleasure, the crew hasn't been doing their jobs properly.

It's all marketing. This is from Krogen's web site for the 42:

There’s no mistaking the rugged heritage of the Krogen 42′ trawler yacht. ......The Krogen 42′ trawler yacht was designed and constructed for yachtsmen and women who prefer timeless to trendy and solid comfort to making waves....

From their site referencing the 58: Whatever the destination, this capable trawler yachts is ready to go and is truly, at home on any sea.

The words
Trawler and Yacht used to actually mean something but that distinction has long gone by the wayside, good or bad.

Just look at the variety of VESSELS on this forum and you will see what I mean. The people have a mindset but they use different vessels to achieve their goal.

Let the flames spit.

As superfluous ostentatiousness increases, the yachtier the vessel :socool:

Our boat is only a yacht if I'm wearing white pants and a navy blue blazer with gold buttons. And maybe an ascot.

"Yacht" is what your wife's divorce lawyer calls your boat in court.

I've always thought of a yacht as a power boat with a paid captain and crew, something to be seen on and a marker of your place in society. By contrast, the trawler is crewed by the owner and family with the purpose of escaping from society.

Wikipedia says yachts start at 10 meters/33 ft and splits them into several subsets from Day Cruiser up to Luxury Cruising Yacht.

Personally, I think of yachts as being luxurious (another nebulous term), having at least one stateroom, a full galley, head, etc. and at minimum coastal cruising ability.

Trawler yachts would be a subset that are full displacement and likely has traditional trawler lines, like it's workboat predecessors.

Edit: hit enter before finishing.

I like it.

Hey Pappa,

As far as yachts go I'd say that Flemming meets the criteria. That 55 is one beautiful world cruiser!

Yes, and your ? Selene looks pretty damn good from way down where I'm sitting and all...:D

PS. In the more logical Southern antipodes, yachts are what you guys call sail boats. Much quicker and easier to say, and there is then no argument about when does a trwler become a yacht. It doesn't.:nonono:
When does a power vessel become a trawler? - when you think it looks a wee bit like one. :)

A Yacht is a pleasure boat and can be any of many designs.

"Trawling" is a type of commercial net fishing. A Trawler is the type of boat that fishes by trawling or a person that fishes by trawling. A pleasure boat that is made to resemble the look of this traditional type of fish boat is a Trawler.

Ditto

Many persons who have no boat may class many boats on TF as yachts.

People with most boats on TF could care less what "class" anyone thinks their boat is.

Anyone who has a boat that is not used as a commercial vessel, depending on their ego and the boat's size, may feel they have a "Pleasure Boast"!

We simply have a good ol' pleasure boat... And, You?????

The word 'yacht' is an anglization of the Dutch word 'Jacht' and was a single mast sailboat with fore and aft sails. In the 17th century they started to become popular with noblemen in England and were used for leisure and sport rather than work. Thus started the reputation of yachts being for the rich and were definitely sailing craft.
Vessels primarily powered by other than sail are not proper yachts. Except in the USA where the word has become synonymous with any rich mans maritime play toy. And then this definition spread to the med to blur all lines recognition.
Leisure trawlers were in fact originally conversions of working boats in the 50s and 60s but designers started constructing them from scratch to emulate the look of the working boats for an emerging market of sailors who wanted a 'real' boat that wasn't a 'yacht'. This process accelerated with the acceptance of fiberglass as a suitable building material that was inexpensive and could be mass produced. Nowadays it's mostly used to differentiate a live aboard capable motor boat of a certain size with decent sea keeping qualities from other types such as express cruisers, sport fishermen and weekenders amongst others.
Like pornography, its become one of these 'I know it when I see it' kind of things. Strangely, even small tugboat replicas are thought of as in the trawler category.
We live in strange times where things are not really what they appear to be and the use of specific words to mean specific things has long fallen to the curb of the linguistic highway.

 hi,

The idea of the second corner is why many manufacturers in the EU have begun to call their own products at best with planig hull boats "Trawler" "eco Trawler" and others.

Why is it sexy to be a "Trawler" to day?:smitten:

NBS

If the boat is fitted with a set of lights for Owner Absent , or Crew at Meals , its a yacht.

"Trawler" is an advertising term like" HI FI", meaningless .

95% of recreational "trawlers" are lakes and bays inshore boats and would be dangerous if taken off the shelf.
