Depending on the climate you live with , you might consider "warm shades".

These are insulated and help with air cond or heating and easy to custom order off the net.
 
Those are a level 1 sewing project. Anyone who can sew could make them and if you don't know anyone, there will be someone in your town who makes curtains and drapes for a living.
 
I asked my first ex wife to sew up a hole in my pants pocket and she sewed the pocket closed. I learned to sew myself.

Basic sewing can come in handy around a boat.

We had the Zarcor shades on one of our boats, and they did block out the sun/view well when they were closed. However, even when they were totally open, you lost 50% of the light coming in and half of your view...
