when you least expect it. Headed for the fuel dock to fill up, on the way back we got an overheat alarm for our starboard engine. Shut 'er down and turned the helm over to the Sicilian while I took a look see. Put my hand on the raw water pump and it was hot. got the boat back to the slip and removed the raw water cover plate to find what was left of an impeller I installed on July 2nd of this year. This is why I carry spares.

I hate to ask, was the seacock open?
 
The sea cock was open...I'm thinkin' the intake was blocked by something and shut off the flow of sea water to the pump as we were only movin' at one bell to get to the fuel dock a 1/4 of a mile away from the yacht club.

I'd also be interested to hear what caused such a spectacular failure so soon. I too replaced my impellers around that time.
 
one of the old timers told me to check the exhaust right after startup. We do it every time to look for anything funny and ensure there's the right amount of water coming out (raw water pump is happy)
