I am nearing the end of our boat painting project and am thinking that instead of painting the decks, to lay down fake teak. There are a lot of competitors out there, but many seem rather pricey at $50 - $70/sq.ft.

Does anyone have any experience with plastic teak and can recommend a reasonably-priced solution?

BTW, several months ago I asked about the advisability of sealing cracks with Interprotect 2000e. Our boat was covered with thousands upon thousands of cracks. The painter I hired (and who I have worked along-side every day) decided to dilute 2000e by 50 percent and work it into the cracks with a roller. We ended up applying 5 costs everywhere and have sanded off about 3 of those coats until we got it glass-smooth. Not a single crack has been found. Whether this is the best way, or most cost effective way of taking care of badly crazed gel-coat I can't say, but it seems to have done the trick here.

thanks in advance...

Do you walk around barefoot in warmer weather? If so, the plastic "teak" will be too hot on the feet, unlike the real thing.

Keith, I am thinking of putting it on the rear deck, which is covered with a Bimini.

Gordon, I believe BruceK went through the mental gymnastics of teak, faux teak or removing and glassing over a couple years ago. He eventually removed all teak and glassed the foredeck but under the hardtop protected areas opted for the real deal. Perhaps he will chime in with his rationale against the faux teak soon, if not a private message to him would be great for another real world data point.

Dock neighbors on each side of us had it put on their boats. One is an old Chris Craft and had all the decks done. The other was an older Bayliner 45 who had it put on their cockpit and swim step. Both looked great.
